Noisy front end when going over bumps and turning

I hear a decent amount of clunks and sqeeks when driving over bumps and turning. Could this be bad bushings in the front suspension or a steering box problem? Any help aor comments of similar experiences would be great.

Car is a 89 standard wagon w/ 157k miles and stock suspension.
Thanks
Dan

Could be bushings in the lower or upper control arms, could be the bushings in the front subframe where the radius rods go up, could be upper or lower balljoints, could be tie rod ends, either inner or outer, could be the internal steering rack bushing, could be some loose bolts/nuts in the front end, etc...

Exactly, it could be a number of things in the steering/suspension system. Have a good look over at all the components and go from there.

I just recently had the same problem with my wagon. There were clunking going over bumps and the wheel would shimmy. I had to replace left and right upper control arms and both tie-rod ends.
  • 88EE4,
Where did you buy your parts?
I found a ball joint/tie rod kit on ebay for $129 shipped.

    thanks

  • Both left and right outer tie-rods were shot. Ordered a kit from ebay. We'll see hoe that goes.

if you are getting lots of noise over bumps and such i would say more likely it's a lower ball joint/upper ball joint rather than a tie rod end. odd's are you need a complete suspension rebuilt, those ebay kits with everything included are great stuff for cheap. expect to get about 35,000miles out of the parts. i've just started ordering the whole entire kit and replacing everything every 3-4 years. once you do the whole thing once your self it becomes very easy.
  • my wagon was doing the same shit and i replaced the top of the strut and most of the noise went away
  • Replaced the front suspension with trhe ebay kit and all is well.
