transmission not going into gear

so i am trying to hook the transmission cable back up. but if i bolt it in the car is in drive. it needs to be in reverse i believe. the transmission is the origonal from the wagon its on a z6 engine. any ideas of how to reset or adjust the cable to be able to get it running?

    just put cable in place and pull up as hard as you can on cable and tighten it up...the problem is the cable isnt pulling it enought to disengage clutch so it wont go in or out of gear i had that problem..if that doesnt work your clutch all together maybe the problem
