1991 Honda Civic Wagon Tachometer

My tachometer works intermittently and the needle jump erratically above 4K rpm. What is weird is that in the morning it works in the afternoon it does not. What could be the problem and where do I start checking?

Thanks,

  • Has your car had the Igniter Recall done? Check with your local dealer or HONDA. The coil or ignitor will mess with your tach. Any other problems with it currently? Check on the Igniter Recall first... if it has been done, make sure you don't have an aftermarket igniter (if you have or someone has changed distributors, etc.) The newer TEC (factory) ignitor is brown and has a bolt on heat sink. I should be able to e-mail you the Bulletin if you need it.

I am new to Honda's and got this car a few days ago. Can you please e-mail me the bulletin? How would I know if this has been done? Where is the igniter located? inside the distributor?

    Thanks

Sounds like an ignitor to me - a flaky tach is a common symptom. Yes, the ignitor is inside the distributor. It's possible to replace it seperately, but it could be tricky to find a store willing to sell you anything but the complete distributor.

Took the bulletin to our service department and they already ordered the igniter. Thanks a Lot I hope this cures the tach problem
