4-2-1 header in a rt4wd

close to getting my wagon back on the road. found a big crack on the back of the exhaust manifold so I figured I'd order a ebay 4-2-1 header. Now i just caught wind that there is a clearance issue with the transfer case and these headers.
I'm holding off on ordering the header untill i find out about this. But at the same time I'm starting to get in a time crunch with this.

So what are the mods to make it fit? I'm not set up to weld SS so that's out of the question. Any "shop" welding around here is usually roughly a $50 minimum. And you never get charged the minimum.

If anybody has pics of the mod that would be helpful too!

  • i wanted the same thing too but the passage between the oilpan and transfercase is so narrow. maybe the only way to go is mods of the headers. not sure though never actually tried fitting one. im also afraid that the mods might alter the length of the downpipe.

Looks like I'm gonna pick up another stock unit.

I got some feedback from jackmarkgraf that the 4-1 will not clear either.
Read some reviews on the 4-1's that would fit. Problem with those is the the initial tubing length before they merge isn't long enough. I don't understand header dynamics... but the general jist I got was that if it fits, it's probably not worth buying.

:( IF you read past threads...NO headers will clear the 4WD.Sorry.

Yes but you can hammer/bend/fabricate a header to work. slammedtallboy was running a header on his rt4wd, just had to do some hammering to get it to fit.

Yeah, but if you're going to hammer and squeeze a header into that tiny hole, it pretty much negates the purpose of having a header in the first place.

Me again, modding the header is the only way to fit bud, I'm telling ya. Knowing what it requires now it really isn't that big of a deal, just takes a little time and some extra materials. I'll post a pic this afternoon of how I did mine.

Ive had my header reconfigured twice. If you have a exhaust guy you trust, they can pretty much do anything.

I did the fab myself. It didn't take long once I figured out what I needed to do.

What size tubing is that? Any chance you could somehow manage a photo from directly underneath showing the pipe around the oil pan and the transfer case?

I am doing exactly that on my RWD conversion, and I need to make sure I can fit the 3" pipe I'm going to use on my collector. I have a Kamikaze 4-1, and all I need is to run the 3" pipe from the collector which is in the same place as yours to the flange near the steering rack.

I've got to change out the front main seal and when I do that I'll post some pics of the clearance. There's definitely enough room for a 3" pipe though (in the future plans for turbo for me). The pipe I'm using is 2"

Nice work man! Last I heard you made it sound like you had created some horrid hack job of a header.
    That came out pretty slick!
So..... when you go turbo, what are you gonna do with that setup :D .
    keep me informed!

Boosting is right around the corner so I'll definitely keep you informed :)

so the stock unit I picked up locally is a Z6. And the z6 exhaust manifold has a double bottom tube. Does anybody know if this will work with the rt4wd? I'm thinking it prob will not, just no time to check before tomorrow afternoon.

    No it won't.

The 'bottom tube' from a SOHC ZC that came out of a JDM RT4WD vehicle should work fine - it did for me on my RTi. I used the top half of the manifold from the DOHC ZC and the bottom half of the manifold from the SOHC ZC, this gave me 4-2-1 but still cleared the transfer case and sump.
