Is the starter turning it over fast enough to fire? If it will push-start it should go with the starter.

sounds like a bad starter to me. check your connections, i have the jiggle the starter wires from time to time.

hmm well i picked up another starter off an 88 Crx D15 and realized there not the same. i dont understand why but that sucks. ill try nd get a new starter.

i believe the 88's had a different flywheel, which may account for the different starter. i have actually NEVER, in my 11 years behind the wheel of 88-91 hondas, had a starter go bad on me. i've had bad connections before though. but if push starting it works, the it must be the starter.

when you try and start it does it make a lot of *clicking* noises?

Starters are actually a common issue on late 80's to early 90's Hondas. You'll find if you turn the key over and get your mate to give the starter a light tap it will work, it's because the solenoid seizes (apparently). It happened to one of my older Civics and also a friends Prelude.

well no it doesnt make that tik tik tik tik tik tik tik. i tried and swap the starter. i was told it should bolt up. and it did. it tries to start but its almost there. i dont get it. its like right there about to start but it doesnt :(

You need to be a little more descriptive. So before when you turned the key it made a clicking noise but wouldn't turn over. Now you have replaced the starter motor and it turns over she just doesn't fire?

If that is the case i would be checking that you have fuel and spark.

Do you hear the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to one before ignition?

ya i am confused now too, i thought it wasn't even turning over.

im sorry. let me re explain myself. at first, it WOULD try cranking but just wouldnt get to start. sounded like the starter wasnt strong enough or it was turning slow. but it i push started it it would run just fine. NOW i changed the starter with a different starter from an 88 dpfi crx and tryed cranking it. now it sounds like its about to start but just doesnt. ive checked the fuel, yes it does prime, i took out the return line on the fuel nd cranked it, fuel came out straight. so im sure the fuel pump is good. the car has a brand new head and dizzy. im not sure whats going on. HELP!! :?

    Have you tested for spark?
  • what's with the battery...

    Starter ground?
    Battery connections solid?
    Main relay?
  • quartersquarters Council Member
main relay. sounds crazy, but spray some 'starter ether' into the intake manifold. if she starts up, your main relay is toasted. don't listen to what anyone says about starter ether. i was a flat broke bumb and used it on a 90 accord for an entire summer. in the end i paid more for ether than i did for a relay... young and stupid. if it was parked in the shade it would start, if it was in the sun, it wouldn't.
