complete EX wiring harnesses

alrighty, so i got to thinking... what if i was to completely change over my wagons wiring harness to that of an EX sedan? this way, i would have:

-MPFI
-power windows
-power mirrors
-power door locks
-cruise control
-A/C

i did however realize there wouldnt be wiring for a rear wiper or sprayer, but that can't be to hard to splice in, right?

so anywho i went to the junkyard this morning, and the ONLY 4th gen civic out there was a white EX sedan, stick shift =) lucky eh?

the catch:
-it was missing the resistor box and the wires were cut for it.
-there was some weird messy wiring under the interior fuse box were it looks like someone installed an alarm.

so, im asking you guys if i should get it? i lost interest when i saw the messy wiring and the fact that it didnt have the rear wiper/sprayer. but it shouldnt be too hard to see what was jacked up and repair it, right?

main reason i wanted this is for the stock MPFI wiring (and the power features lol).

[fwiw, the car had everything intact, including spindles, transmission, engine, etc.. the brake M/C was not the original unit though. it was the smaller 13/16 unit]

Not worth it. Its a headache to pull the wiring out and put wiring in (i've done it)

Its easier to convert DPFI-MPFI (i've done this a few times, its not that difficult). Best bet is to grab the engine harness. You can get a resistor box from a lot of different Hondas/Acuras (earlier models, looks like a twinky).

I would highly recommend grabbing the front brakes!

I could be wrong but isn't the brake master cylinder suppose to be 15/16?

If the interior matches your interior and you are doing a power window/lock conversion start grabbing the interior parts for it, or grab everything.

they have aftermarket cruise controls available, otherwise installation of the OEM one will be a headache (wiring wise, and hardware wise).

And you could grab the a/c parts and wiring while you are at it. the Hvac system has its own wiring.

Oh yeah grab the guage cluster and ecu (since its 5spd and has a higher redline, and ecu should be pm6)

if i think of anything else i'll be sure to let you know.

yeah i have done wiring before too, and know its a headache haha. i got almost all the engine wiring out before i was like "whatever" and left it... thats not an issue with me.

i already have the MPFI conversion done, but i want to have the wiring be STOCK, know what im saying? right now it seems i may be having slight issues due to not very good contacts, and instead of redoing the conversion i though i would install the EX harness instead. (oh, and i have like 2 resistor boxes sitting around, not an issue either).

and with the power options, if i have to tear apart my interior to install them anyways (i did when i installed PDL) i might as well do it 'right'

i already got the ECU though ;) its a PM6.

brakes: yeah they are supposed to have 15/16 M/C but whoever serviced this car installed a 13/16 one

You found an EX in the junk yard? LUCKY!

I am in the process of doing a multi point swap on my DX auto wagon right now, I am using a PS9 ECU. I will be doing the power window, locks & mirrors soon, But since I can not find a EX auto parts car, I am going to be using a LX Harness. Since I will all ready be multi point swapped, I will just have to change a few pins to do the LX harness, when I get around to doing the swap.

Just splice in the rear wiper in. I was even thinking about eliminating the rear wiper all together on mine.

If that EX has the front brakes, I would definatly grab them.

Do you have anymore bull bars laying around?

    lol, no bullbars!

im really starting to decide i may just go ahead and get it.

You can't get the current setup running smoothly, why would you contemplate changing the entire cars loom and introducing (possibly) more problems?

    because it cant hurt.

Yes, it can hurt. Fix your problems, then go fucking it up again. :P

the whole point of installing this other harness IS to fix the problems.

You want to install a whole new harness to fix what?????? Get a Haynes book, unplug your ECU and go through and check each pin to the voltage or resistance specs of the factory. That will tell you what wires are lacking in continuity, what circuits are broken and what sensore need to be replaced. You can check sensors at the actual sensor but if the sensors are good you are going to need to check from the ECU to the sensor and make sure the voltage or resistance is the same. It really is not that hard, just need a ohmmeter

i'll borrow an ohmmeter this saturday then, i think i know where to source one..

i still want the power features though

So you just want the body harness not the engine harness. To me it seems like it would be just as much a PITA to feed a new wire harness in, as just feeding in some extra wires.
  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert
    sorta..

i still want the engine harness too, whats more reliable then using an OEM MPFI harness? this would plug straight into the OEM chassis harness with all of the above features and not have to worry about crap like trying to figure out where to run wires for them, where to put fuses, etc. i know NOTHING about stuff like that.

my plans were to add rear fogs, rear horn, cargo area cig-lighter plug, and rear wiper/washer wiring all with the wire harness out of the car for easy installation later on in the fall when i come back from Europe (for which i am leaving to in 11 days woot woot!)

but seeing as i now have no money at all for the next couple days, who knows what will happen. whatever. :?

if you do the dpfi-mpfi conversion correctly you shouldn't really be able to tell that it was converted. if it is then you should really practice at making it look stock. Its a LOT easier then pulling a car apart and running new wiring that is from a different car and trying to install it.

i did the swap a while back..

here is what it looks like. pretty OEM eh? ;)
could be bettwe, but whatever  i'll redo it all much nicer with less looms once i get my swap motor. whenever that happens...
