Rust repair - rockers and quarters
Searched for awhile and didn't see much about this. My rockers are real crunchy underneath the plastic and I have the typical rear fender edge rot. Obviously no replacement panels exist, wondering if anyone had tried using most of the sedan panels, cutting off parts at the edges that aren't compatible. I'm kinda into the idea of replacing the plastic panel with smooth metal rockers like on the sedan, given that they are long enough. As far as the quarters go, maybe they are relatively the same fender line and shape as the sedan and one could use all but the bit by the taillight. I did resto work on several Beetles at a shop several years ago and those panels never quite fit right and always had to be modded around the edges to work with the car, which is what got my gears turning.

As far as the quarters go there will be a slight difference from sedan to wagon where the wheel arch that’s in front of the rear tire (rear of the door) it’s a little narrow compared to the wagon, I’ve seen it done I forgot who did it but if you don’t mind the rear wheel not being centered cause of the sedan quarters are narrow by the wheel compared to our wagons. I’ll try and find a pic of what I mean
If there were photos that would be great, thanks for looking. I feel like it could probably make something like that work with a little extra fabrication if the quarter would just generally give me a decent template. Its definitely not a showroom car, mainly would just like to have a solid body.
What do you think of the idea for the rockers? I know the door openings would likely not line up, but mine aren't rusty that far up so I would probably just use the lower 3/4 of them if the width and overall length was close.
The links were here but the links are dead 🤦♂️
