different wiring for EF cluster?

So I know that if you stay year specific that an EF cluster should work the same. I have an 89 wagon and I am trying to use an 89 EF SI cluster. When I plug it, it does not work, it seems like the speedometer is working on the gas and the rpm is working on the heater. But the RPM and Speedometer just does not move. Also, the brake light only comes on when i turn the lights on and the Highbeam stays on even though the highbeam is not on. Can someone tell me if I'm doing it wrong??

first off, the speedometer is connected by a cable. make sure its plugged in.

second, and MOST IMPORTANTLY.. that IS NOT an '89 cluster. that most definitely is a 90-91 cluster. sorry mang! but thats your problem ;)

    88-89 cluster looks like this:

here are some pics to help you in your swap. all the info is from http://www.tuner-junction.com/TJForum/h ... 1-crx.html . If your swapping the cluster you will have to re pin the connectors or just hack the old ones of and solder them on. You will also need to switch to a electronic VSS as your cluster has the VSS built in. The odd thing is. it looks like a 90-91 cluster but it has a cable speed-o set up on it. Hope that helps and if you need any help pm me. I swapped a JDM CRX cluster in my 88 and had to re do all the wires. Worked great after I figured out the VSS wiring and that you need to fuse the power if its comming straight from the batt.

    S2000.

btw, the 90-91 Civics STILL use a speedometer cable.

that extra plug on the back, who knows what its for because i had a cluster with it and just didn't plug it in, nothing bad happened ever
  • No electronic VSS on 88-91 Civic/CRX/Wagon... all cable!

okay. so i'm not understanding this VSS thing. how does this work?? anyone with a detailed DYI or any info so that i can feel confident in what i will be doing.

you dont have a VSS so dont worry about it
just get a cluster for an 88-89 and forget all the headaches ;)
  • noobnoob Band Wagon
    that sounds more reasonable. :D

I should add that the cluster swap I did was a JDM SIR cluster and it uses a electronic VSS. You also have to get the metal brackets that the cluster screws too as well as the cluster bezel i guess it would be called as the 90-91's have a rounded top.

Where did you put it after you picked it up?
  • That S2000 cluster fits horribly in EF's...

Seems unnecessary, especially from a 3 month old

There is an opel digital cluster that is sqare. I need to get some pics of it. Might fit pretty good under our bezels.

You will also need to have the cluster modified to use a regular VSS and i think its a oil temp sensor.

    http://www.marklamond.tsohost.co.uk/pro ... /order.htm

Here is the man to do it. prices and everything you ever wanted to know about swapping the cluster. For the $500+ its gonna cost you, you could do a custom cluster of autometer guages.

Back on track though. How is the cluster swap going? Did the info I pm'ed you help?

Oh and after looking at his site its 170 euro to convert the cluster.

Live rates at 2009.05.01 08:32:38 UTC
    170.00 EUR

    =

    225.081 USD
    Euro United States Dollars
    1 EUR = 1.32400 USD 1 USD = 0.755284 EUR

So say $225 plus the cost of the cluster, plus the cost of shipping both ways. Then it has to sit in customs both ways. So figure its gonna take you atleast 2 months to get it sent off, converted, then shipped back and wait to clear customs. Wish I had the money to do it.

Edit: looking over ebay a cluster from a 2000-2003 will run you anywhere from $75 to $200. I couldnt find a 04 and up.
