  • uhm.. first get your engine reach temp (?) not to hot ...
    then clean ... personally,
    never use a power washer
    electrickery of dynamo, connectors, distributor

    petrol, diesel, brakecleaner
    some acid based solutions
    to spray, tarbrush ...

    always be careful, protect yourself

im not worried about using a pressure washer, its just for the engine block and tranny.
  • whats that purple stuff I always see... I can't remember the name of it. It comes in a black gallon jug like an antifreeze bottle and it has a purple cap.

X2, but I'll add: Don't try to reverse years of accumulation in one day. The crud that's built up on your engine is BUILT UP on your engine. Peel it off a layer at a time, ie: every time you wash your car, wash your engine. Every time you clean it you'll expose another layer. You don't want to use anything too aggressive.
A pressure washer is not necessarily bad, but be circumspect about where you point it. You can cut rubber/plastic or force water into electrical gear.

Simple Green is great, BUT, not if you're allergic to licorice. Seriously, I knew a guy who was, and Simple Green set him off too. So I couldn't use it while I lived with him.

You probably dont get it in the states, but I use one here CRC engine dregreaser. Works wonders

Oh, we get all KINDS of CRC stuff here. :)
  • try 3D detailing yellow degreaser. its super strong. i used this chemical when i was into detailing and still use it in my car for engine wash. of course use it with high pressure wash. it can be purchase at their website. just my two cents.

    wagon......................4ever..............
  • if you can find it, formula 88 its called comes in a brown 1gal jug. it cleans the best and wont tarnish the metal like purple power seems to do (longer purple power sits on the blacker the block gets! be careful!)

i used a big bucket of hot water with laundry powder (clothes washing powder) and a scrubbing brush and it worked better than the intustrial degreaser/parts wash stuff I have at work

nope go to dollar store and get "awesome"... thats the best... just clean my whole engine in engine bay at the car wash... looks show styles....

you guys get Gunk out in the states?

thats what i and most people use here.
  • HondaBrite is a great 'no scrub' cleaner. It is a motorcycle product, but car franchises can get it too. It works good at cleaning corrosion off aluminum too. Part#'s 08732-0020B for 20 oz. Spray, 08732-0032 for 32 oz. refill Jug. Don't let it sit for long, as it will leave a milky white residue, it's a spray and rinse and it works better than you would imagine....

Yeah, and I wish there was something else which was better.
I'm having luck with stardrops, but it's not too great TBH.

TBH I've tended to go to the garage with a garden sprayer, buy some petrol and then visit the jet wash :)

    i find gunk fine.
doesnt get carbon build up off valves though :(
thats the only thing that it hasnt taken off so far on my cleaning adventures
