question from noob to gurus' [different plugs?]

okay... i have a 91 rt [my rust bucket] and i just recently bought an 88 rt. i had to do the wiring on it and so i decided to rip the one off my 91, both engine and cabin harness out and just put that on my 88.
The plugs from the rear body harness to the front by the fuse box are different, meaning i had to cut and switch the connectors to get my fuel pump working. and i believe they have the same number of wires, just completely different colors.. ill take pictures later...
i was just wondering if anyone knew what wires go with wat.. has anybody experienced this? i actually got my fuel pump working by just trying to match as many wires up as possibly, but i am unsure if the rest is correct...
