$10 flash ring and photos!

so i ws bored to day and decided i would make a flash ring. (this is my first attempt. i will make a nice one some time down the road i just had some free time)

here is the build and some photos i took. forgive me for taking pics of myself i didnt have anyone esle around to take pics of.

so here is what i bought (dollar store is your friend)

plastic bowl, some kinda of tubing, aluminum tape, and a flash(you could also use a light if you dont want it to be a flash just so you have a ring light) i also got black paint so paint the outside of the bowl.

mark where you will cut holes for the lense and flash (if you have a dremil use it to cut the holes. (my dremil sucks so i hot knifed it)

now take your tape that you have and wrap the outside of the tube in it. and the inside of the bowl.(if you have a glue gun glue the tube in.) if not just tape it in as i did.

at this point i decided to paint the bowl. you can feel free to skip this step.

if you have an erector set some where around the house you are lucky grab some pieces and make a bracket for you ring. i have a paint stirrer and some dry wall screws . I took a spare tripod i had and used the mount for the ring.

here is what i would of likes it to look like but i didnt have a flash shoe extension cord.

233.jpg

i had to mount flash on the camera and make a reflective tube so send the light into the ring. doesnt looks that great but it works!

232.jpg

here is this one again just to show final product. as for a diffuser i just used some printer paper that i wrapped around the bowl.

well here are some of the pics that i took of myself and a few thins that were in my place. hope you like and hope you find this thread some what useful!

  • Interesting build. Easy to do, and inexpensive besides.

Are the overexposed pictures the "before" pictures, with a plain flash? Or was the flash ring just too close? Forgive my ignorance; I'm not really certain what the advantage of a flash ring is.
  • well the flash i used wasnt one that s for my camera so the camera wont tell it the correct flash setting. so its really bright in these pics but if i had the correct flash it would be as bright. flash ring used for macro and fashion photography.

here rather then me explaining here is the Wikipedia definition

    Ring flash
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    A ring flash device

A ring flash, invented by Lester A. Dine, in 1952 originally for use in dental photography[citation needed], is a circular photographic flash that fits around the lens, especially for use in macro (or close-up) photography. Its most important characteristic is providing even illumination with few shadows visible in the photograph, as the origin of the light is very close to (and surrounds) the optical axis of the lens. When the subject is very close to the camera, as is the case in macro photography, the distance of the flash from the optical axis becomes significant. For objects close to the camera, the size of the ring flash is significant and so the light encounters the subject from many angles in the same way that it does with a conventional flash with soft box. This has the effect of further softening any shadows.

Ring flashes are also very popular in portrait and fashion photography. In addition to softening shadows, which can be unflattering to models, and bringing out unsightly wrinkles, the unique way that a ring flash renders light gives the model a shadowy halo which is a common feature of fashion photography.

Macro ring flash usually consists of two parts: a shoe-mount unit mounted on a hot shoe, and a circular flash unit mounted on the front of a lens. Power is supplied by batteries in the shoe-mount unit, and a cord relays the power and control signals to the circular flash unit. For larger ring flash units like those used for fashion photography, power is usually delivered by a power pack which can be battery or AC powered. Some ring flashes however, like ones made by Alien Bees, are constructed like mono lights where the light and power are contained in one unit. Within the circular flash unit, there can be one or more flash tubes, each of which can be turned on or off individually. Some ring flashes have focusing lamps for helping low-light focusing. Ring flash diffusers are also available, which have no light source of their own, but instead mount in front of a conventional flash unit and transmit the light to a ring-shaped diffuser at the front of the lens.
  • what about a cake tin and a polish ?
  • ive seen a 9inch pie tin and a mini pie tin flash ring as well online. pretty much any thing you can make a ring out of and put a flash to you can make into a flash ring.
  • oh, cewl, didnt know that
