Ice racing!

I've been looking forward to this ever since I got my wagon. For years, I've been participating in the Boston Chapter BMW CCA's Ice Racing series - essentially an autocross on a frozen lake. It's looking probable that the first event of hopefully many in 2009 will be happening this Sunday! I can't wait to see what my RT4WD on studs can do. I'll be up against a lot of Subarus, I'm sure, but I know that large amounts of power don't mean a thing on the ice - nobody has the grip to put all their power down, including me, so it evens out the playing field. I can't wait to get laughed at in my Civic wagon, and then watch the jaws drop when it's actually fast. (Actually, I won the AWD/all-season tire class in a Grand Caravan 3.8 a few years ago, so these guys already know they should watch out for me...)
Read all about it here: http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/EventDescr ... acing.aspx
If you're in New England, come on out and play, whatever you drive. (Few BMWs actually participate in these events. ) I will definitely be shooting and posting video.

the wall loves you too
Well the car is fine now - no head banging necessary. However, the event was cancelled at the last minute due to 2" of standing water on top of the soft ice thanks to today's warm temps. ARGH!!! I just can't win!
maybe next year
Second place in class S (all cars with street legal studded tires), beaten only by an Audi A6. Seven runs (!) plus I ran a practice course, which was untimed and people could take as many runs on as they liked. Only 44 entries - today's event conflicted with a NER SCCA rallycross nearby - so that meant LOTS of seat time!
Conditions varied tremendously throughout the day. My first run was pretty slippery, what you'd expect on the ice. Once the sun started warming things up, we got an unbelievable amount of grip for most of the day. I was using full throttle in many places! Best of all for me, there was enough traction to drive like I was on gravel, which I learned how to do at Team O'Neil Rally School. Things got a bit more slippery and messy as a layer of slush and then water formed on top of the ice, but despite 50F temps there was no danger of anyone falling through. The hardest part of the day was getting all the cars off the ice, since conditions at the boat ramp had deteriorated. A little last minute ramp reconstruction and a creative exit procedure saw everyone get off the lake, with only a carbon fiber Subaru STi splitter for a casualty.
I got no video from outside the car but plenty on board. I'll be processing and posting that as the week goes on.
as in
goose pimple beautifull
wagon .....4ever............................
Oops.
its not ice but if you are in the L.A./Ventura area on PCH, try the Yerba road where the Neptune restaurant is (wont miss it, lots of bikes parked outside). Its an uphill, winding, at times slippery due to rocks/mud road with deep drops should you veer off. My arms usually ache after a drive in my 90 wagon.
Big thank for the vids. Definitely sweeeeeet..........
looks like what i'm planning to do @ a walmart parking lot. lol
I'm waiting for the lakes here in WI to get thick enough to get to an event. Can't wait.
You lost to an A6, what else in your class did you beat?
