+++SiWagon TIP: QUICK Winter Warming & Defogging

This is the quickest way to Warm up during winter.
1)Turn the temp knob to the hottest point.Once you warm up you can lower it later.
2)Adjust the fan speed knob to # 1,2,3, or 4 as needed.
3)Slide position knob to the center vent(the 1 to the far left I think).
4)Close the passenger louver vent & the center louver vent(furthest away from you of the two).
5) Slide the knob(under outer vent)to the left. This is to stop the outside air from blowing in.
6)Adjust the 2 closest vents so the warm heat blows towards each of your hands. It works the best if the center vent is barely open. This evens out the air flow to both hands.
7)Slide the upper knob to recirculate the inside air.

This works 'cuz when you close the other 2 vents it increases the velocity of the heat to your hands.

Quickest way to DEFOG the front window.

This step should be done before doing the above heating steps. This tip defogs way faster than using just the heater. That's why I always get AC.A lot of guys want to remove the AC,but the whole thing only weights 50lbs(approx.23 kilos) not like early Camaro AC that weights 200lbs.

A)Turn temp. knob to hottest point.
B)Slide knob to defog position(far right).
C)Adjust the fan speed knob to # 1,2,3, or 4 as needed.
D)Hit the AC button.

This works 'cuz the AC removes the humidity(that causes the fog).It takes the heater much longer to warm-up & defog.

  • awesome tip(s) thanks ...

    if you dont drive immediately:
better gently revving the engine after start, idle doesnt get it hot
so quick, maintained engine less than 5 minutes to top temp
(and i drive an automatic, har har)

  • sorry, good tips though :) i just saved some cash that would have normaly bought some headers or other go fast looking good stuff and got an alarm with door locks remote start and pager :) ill tell you my key doesnt have to get stuck in that ice hole and car is nice and warm! even came with a turbo timer! its worth the cash i tell you 8)
  • : ) yeah, nice Luke...

try not parking in your garage
    or migrating to the tropics

In addition to all the above, I'm also using the old trucker's trick of a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Slid it down between the rad and the AC condensor. At 65-70mph on the highway, I get so much cooling that the engine doesn't even warm up to temp on a cold day. Blocking off much of the radiator has helped me a lot. Of course, I have to be ready to pull that cardboard right out as soon as outside temps warm up a bit and I find myself idling at a standstill. :)

This is some funny s**t, specially coming from a guy in California!!

I like the tip about using AC in winter. I'll have to try this.

I guess us Central Canada Canucks (I live in the province right above North Dakota so, if you've seen the movie Fargo, you know what I'm talking about), who live with cold conditions from October to April, can always learn a few new tricks.

    Cheers !!
  • Yeah the AC thing is true, my wifes CRV turns the AC on automatically when you when you turn the defrost on high. Works like a charm.

One more additional tip, though not necessarily related to FAST heating. The stock thermostat is designed to keep your engine running at 180*F. There are alternate thermostats available. One runs cooler (170*F) for if you're in a warm climate and/or run your engine in such a way that it heats up a lot. And one - this is the one we're interested in - runs hotter (195*F), which, in cold climates, will keep the engine warmer and allow more heat to be sucked into the car once up to temperature.

After freezing my ass off on the way to work one time too many today, I'm picking up a 195* thermostat and installing it tonight. I'll let you know how it works.

And, of course, make sure your cooling system is FULL of coolant. If it's running low, the system is less effective at transferring heat away from the engine, and therefore into the interior of the car.

    i'll second that ...

buy a cheap ass car seat-heater thingy...

AND IT WORKS!!! Using exactly the same test, after cranking my heat after the engine warmed up, I had to turn it DOWN because I was burning up. 8) I'd rather have the ability to get too much than not be able to get enough. The real test will be later this week, where high temps in the single digits will make me think I'm in the Great White North...
  • A tip about trying to quickly get your ENGINE up to operating temp fast:

Do NOT try and warm the engine up with the heat on - it will take literally 15 minutes or so longer than normal if it's cold out. It's been literally 15 degrees each morning here in my part of GA and I made the mistake a few times of leaving the heat on whilst the car was warming up. 20 minutes later and the temp guage was barely off the "C" and the inside of the car was still cold.

I cranked he car up and left it running with no heat on and within 10 minutes it was at operating temps and once the heat was turned on full blast, center vents the inside was warm in no time. If you hold the gas at 3000rpm or so the engine warms up very quickly - this is completely sfe as even honda service manuals usually require you to hold the engine at 3000rpm or so to wait for fans to come on before doing many diagnostic checks, including idle speed, etc.

Also something most people don't think of when trying to rapidly heat the interior is that if you put the blower on recirculate, and the vent mode on split face and feet 50/50 the actual temp is hotter, because the blower pulls the recirculating air from the floorboard, just under the dash. Once it draws the already hotter air to recirculate it gets that much hotter. Once it's burning hot you can out it back to face and get the entire cabin toasty.

One last thing is that in sheer temps the lower fan speeds, 1 and 2, yield hotter temps than if you have it on full blast 3 or 4 fan speed. Same goes for A/C. the air coming across slower yiels hotter temps when on full hot; colder when on full cold.

I have a Electric Block warmer on my wagon!!

What I hate is when it starts warming up then you notice you have the heat knob on cold. Not thinking you flip it over to all the way warm and the temp needle just dive bombs  I just leave the heat all the way up now and im good. Its nice that our wagons have that fresh air vent. helps regulate your temp alittle easier. Too all you EG owners that don't have one, well it sucks to be you 8)
  • you flip it over to all the way warm
    it's also 1st aid when an engine's
overheating...combined with fan switch - 4 (high speed)

The owners manual has good info on the best defogging and heating tips. Not that they haven't already been covered. But using the AC is specifically mentioned as a dehumidifier. It worked alot better once I converted the ac to r134a from the r12. Amazing that...

Airconditioning is definately the best dehumidifier - works literally within seconds on my Pulsar. Stupid Pulsar takes ages to get engine temps up for heater though, even with temp turned to cold. :(
