Brake problems after ss lines installed...

first a little background info...

i just put in some ebay ss brake lines for the wagon a couple of days ago. brake bluid was replaced and bled properly (in right order, 3 times each side and all around 3 times). after driving it i realized that braking is only slightly better (read: almost no difference) but at times the pedal will go to the floor quicker than it used to(best way i can describe it) and with minimal braking effect. i was also disappointed that i didnt get that firm feel like i have in my other cars in the past.

so with the help of my wife i again bled my brakes watching and hoping to see some air come out but i didnt get any air out of the system. i have to assume i dont have a leak cause i've been keeping an eye on fluid level and there was no drop in fluid level.

so tonight i get home pump the brakes about 2 times and i get a rpm surge from about 800-1300rpm. now i have to say that i dont know if this would have happened before the ss lines were installed.

now to my dumb question:

do you guys think that this surge is happening because of some vacuum leak? if so, why now? i didnt touch any vacuum hoses all i did was replace the brake fluid and lines. i inspected the the ss lines and they looked good. i bled the brakes properly and at two different times, not getting any air out at all the second time. so what gives?

anyway, i cant figure out what it could be. any help would be appreciated... oh, and sorry for the novel...

Theres a vacuum hose going from the intake manifold to the booster, in the middle of that hose is a valve. I had a similar issue and i needed to replace that.
  • Okay I am not sure if the wagon has one because I don't have the manual in front of me but it is something to check.

I had the same symptoms on my Nissan pickup. I changed out the lines, nothing, rear cylinders, nothing, master cylinder, nothing, booster, it was better, but I was still losing pressure and my rpms were fluctuating when I pushed on the pedal.

This is where I found out that these brake systems have this stupid valve that is in between the line from the motor to the booster. It lets pressure move only one way. This went bad and this is what was allowing pressure to bleed back the other direction. It was also causing my rpms to fluctuate up and down when the brake pedal was pushed.

Follow that line from the booster to the engine and see if it is spliced somewhere. I would think the wagon has one but I am not sure. When I get back from work I will get the manuals out and see if I can find it.
  • Yes the wagon has one and thats exactly whats going on with my brakes. Sometimes its hard then instantly releases or sometimes it feels squishy. sometimes when I hit the brakes the idle will go up or drop down. You just need to replace that check valve and if thats not it, well at least it wasn't that expensive and its a good start to diagnosing the problem. :D

A ghetto way to check it is to blow into both sides of it, only one way should allow you to blow through it

so if my car idle surges when stopped this may be the culprit? my car also will sometimes idle up to like 3k rpms when stopped and just hold it there. i assumed it was my IACV or TPS.
