opinions on Boston X-over

OK, I just came up on a pair of Boston RC61x cross-overs and tweeters. I wanted opinions on weather or not to buy the missing drivers and install or not. This would be for the front of the car.

A friend of mine has separate drivers and tweeters in his ride and it sounds better than any 3-ways I've ever heard up front. It didn't seem like you had to turn the system up very loud to get really good sound all around. Plus with the x-over you could send more power to the drivers for more bass up front, but what do I know.

Anyways opinions would be nice(Rage, vantasise_stooge_wagon).

Running components will sound better due to having the tweeter at a higher location than the mid, it brings the soundstage up. When running components I would suggest adding a amplifier, in most cases HU power is not up to running a good component set such as the Bostons. If you can find the mid, I would run them. :D I'm going to run 6.5" components front, build pods for the rear, and 2 - 12" subs and 2 amps in a spare tirewell enclosure.
  • I would buy the matching drivers and definately buy a small amp to run the components. Most head units run about 160-200 watts but it isn't a very strong 160-200. Running a separate amp will definately give it better power and better sound.

PLay with the location for the tweeters. I like the bottom corners of the windshield and let the sound reflect off of the glass. I have tried different locations on my white wagon but this location I liked the best. If the drivers are large you might need a spacer so that the window goes all the way down if you are going to use the stock door locations.

Here is my last build not that great but the small amp only runs the component system up front. The larger one drives the sub and rear 5.7's.

While you are in there DEFINATELY tear out all the old wiring. Remember this wiring is old and very thin. I haven't bought a car yet where I didn't rip out all the old wiring, old speakers, and replace everything I could with larger stronger components and wiring.

Remember I am no pro this is just something I do on the side.
  • Damm, thanks for the quick replies. I hooked the tweeters up w/o the x-overs to my home stereo and they sound great, but when I put the x-over inline the tweeters sound like hot ass. Are the x-overs done or is my testing method wrong?

    Thanks.
  • Possibly not tuned correctly.. Boston is the shit.. They have some of the best sound quality that I have ever heard out of stereo equipment..
  • Have you hooked it up correctly? Does it have any switches? Have you tried all the different settings? Some crossovers give you a lot of options some only give you a very few.

Boston equipment is quality stuff as kahuna said so just play with it some more.
  • Europe :

    home stereos: 8 0hm impedance

    car stereos: 4 0hm ...

If this differs it acts like a filter
    (Volts/m / Amps/m = Ohms).
  • There's nothing to adjust on these puppies. Just 3 terminals, one for amp input, and two for speaker output(tweeter, driver). Eagle, you got a point. I'm gonna set up a car amp and try. If nothing else, I've got a nice pair of Boston tweeters.
