DX/DPFI techie needed (solved + pics)

have a missfire on the #3, changed the plugs, cap, and rotor; as well as the spark plug seals. wire is good, checked for spark. after fixing all this car sounds like it's running great, but it still has the miss...the assumption we are going with is something with the fuel system. anyone have any ideas? when we pulled the plugs 1,2,3 where dripping oil and #4 was WAY white. not familiar with the dpfi setup, help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

  • When the valve cover seals start leaking they let oil down into the sparkplugs. Just a little bit of oil will foul out those plugs. You will see what looks like brown stain going up the spark plug towards the top. I would say replace the valve cover gaskets and replace plugs.

    These gaskets:

  • when i said spark plug seals, that is the part i was refering to, thanks for the response but still looking for the solution
  • Sorry, I must have skipped that part about replacing those seals. I'm trying to think of anything else but nothing comes to mind. Are saying oil is getting into the cylinders? Or was the oil on the plugs from before the seals were changed?
  • oil on plugs from before seals where change, when i changed the seals i also changed the plugs. wires were still good, brand new cap and rotor. this problem seems to be stuping the guys on honda-tech too.
  • What about the timing? Have you checked that? Might as well go over the easy stuff first.
  • will double check

Fuel filter is always good to check if you dont know the last time it was replaced. I know it sounds weird, but check the grounds. Weird shit happens with bad grounds.
  • timing is on, feul is flowing through the lines (pump works)...my buddy drove the car to work yesterday and the check engine light came on, codes 1 and 16...o2 and fuel injector.

when we checked the injectors all the wiring looks good so we unplugged the harness from the top injector (brown) and nothing kept running the way it was. then we pulled the harness for the lower injector and the car immediately stalled out. assuming its a bad top injector, getting one from a friend to try and swap it out. which injector is the one that runs all the time and which one is the one that only comes on under load.

    thoughts/suggestions?
  • solved the problem sort off, pulled the head off and there are chunks of valve missing on the exhause side, i'll get you a picture later

Damn chunks of valves??? Did it just kick the pieces oout the exhaust or scar the cylinder walls?? Thats crazy that it just busted some pieces off.
  • unbelievable ... i say hall of fame ...

    : )
  • cylinder walls look ok, thinking the pieces when out the exhaust side. before the car died we did notice it seemed to be running rich. car had 240k on it, the best we can come up with is with all that carbon build-up on the pistons the motor became high compression and it got a little detonation. we had never seen it before either. another interesting issue was that it took 2 hours to "lift" the head off. three guys lifting and it still wouldn't budge, after some serious prying in finally broke off.

    check back for the pics
  • Just looking at the first pic do you see the problem. Look at the #3 cylinder (2nd on the left)...
