Abbey, this one's for you !!!

Abbey, this one's for you !!!

This is what my son and I did today...

Old rusty hatch taken off.

Old rusty hatch gone!!

Tightening up the bolts holding the "Abbey Special", aka my rust-free hatch.

Tightening up the bolts on the spoiler.

Putting on the "cyclops". That what we call the third braking light

Sorry but I don't have any pics documenting the installation of all the trim pieces and such but, needless to say, all the lights work, all the plastic is in place and I'm very happy with my purchase... even if it took the equivalent of 2 years to install it.

I know there is still rust around the keyhole... but I ran out of time. There is also a bit of tint left on the hatch window but nothing too serious. I will eventually paint the hatch to match the car but that won't be until Fall.

Apparently my parents plan to build an insulated and heated garage/workshop so that will give me a perfect spot to do bodywork and paint.

Cheers !!

    Looks 100% better.

Can anyone tell me why wagons were prone to rust and not other civics/crxs? I've never seen rust on civic/crxs but wagons seem to love it so to say.

Never heard of "typical honda rust" were you live?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I think the wagon hatches rust so much just because of the crapy seals for our tail lights. A couple mouse pads and some weather strip adhesive fixed my water problem nicely

    Thx !!!

Yes, even though the hatch and car are not yet color-matched, it does looks 100% better.

I need to take out my "goo-gone" to remove the glue/foam left behind when someone (perhaps Abbey ?? LOL) removed the plastic name tag thingies on each corner of the hatch. Even though I have replacement ones I don't think I'll put anything there... I prefer the clean look.

As for Civics not rusting out, in my neck of the woods, Civics rust out in the same spots as wagons, i.e. rear wheel arches.

My wife's '96 Civic DX has rust on the rear wheel arches and I have her permission (LOL) to apply my rust-removal skills on her baby as soon as I have a chance.

Maybe I jsut don't see too much of it because I live in Oregon. Not many salty roads around here if that is the culprit. I see quite a few wagons rusted, myabe I just notice them more than others.

    consider yourself lucky

i've "lost" more than one reliable Honda to the Midwestern Cancer. The older models are even more susceptible.
AND they ALL get it right behind the rear wheel wells, even the 92-95 and later models although the guage of the metal and rustproofing/paint has come a long way.

    Lalu,
    That hatch looks AWESOME!
i've even got a replacement for that corner piece if you don't wanna grind it. but it's white.
AND NO.......that gluey tape was not mine. The previous owner put it all over that car and the white one i bought from him. Apparently when you disassemble and break all the clips, Double-sided Tape is the cure all for everything.
Good choice skipping the emblems. I like the clean look.
    Keep up the good work!

NOW would be the best time to spray the interior of that hatch with Rust Inhibitor to keep it protected longterm. You've got the old one to tell where it will rust, so use it as a template to help you point the spray can where it will do the most good. :)

Fill in all those holes where emblems were and even seal up seams with silicone or body filler where the metal is folded around since there is where the rust starts.
