Roof Rack Help

Can you guys help me out. I picked up a oem roof rack on sat and forgot to take measurements. Could someone take pics of thier rack so I can get close. Also after putting the rack on the car I am not sure I like it chrome and will probably paint it black. I was also thinking of just buying a yakima rack as well. Can someone tell me who online has one of this so that I can check in the members section.

thanks

Jeremy

OEM rack... it measures about 8 inchs from the rear spoiler to the back of the roof rails.

timelesswhite has a Thule rack on his, bam-bam has a Yakima rack on his...
  • After looking through the pics I am not convinced that yours is oem. It seems to be installed way far forward then all of the others (at least the type that kimbro has). Yours also looks more roundish (which I like) as mine is more boxy. Either way thanks for the pic and nice rack. Wow I just said you have a nice rack!

  • you are probably right. I think maybe it is just the black that makes it look sexy. I will mount mine again a take pics.
  • I just wanted to thank you for posting pics so quickly. I do not like my oem chrome one so I am going to wait until I find a edm one. I will install a yak for now.

    thanks

how much for your OEM one?
  • I was going to have it powder coated black to see if I like it better. Youll be the first to know if I sell it. Wait dont you have one?
  • wanna trade

naw im rather found of it, haha. looking for an OEM rack (if possible) for my hatchback though.. so if you ever wanna sell it, let me know! i have access to like hungreds of other types of racks here at my junkyard if there is somnething from a differet model you'd like (like bam-bam's Kia rack) and we coud trade that.. or who knows. long day, i'll stop talking now.
  • Let me powder coat it first and see if I like it. I am thinking that the chrome is just what makes it look funny with my black and blue car. You will be the first I contact if I decided to get rid of it.

Since I don't have roof rack on mine, I was thinking putting one of the after market roof rack Thule/Yakima?

    Questions:

    1. Which brand would you prefer? Thule or Yakima?
    2. Is there something I need to know rather than just ordering the right specification for my car? (which is a 91)
    3. I was thinking to visit one of the junkyard and see If I can get a factory roof rack for wagons to save a little cash, would this damage my roof since my roof feels a little flimsy same thing applies to the aftermarket one?

Any little tips and advice of putting them on would be appreciated? I'm using it for the upcoming snowboarding season.

    Thanks

    1. i prefer Yakima just because... i like the name better haha and the fact that the bars are round. also its a bit cheaper ;) but its all preference.

    2. when you go to the Yakima dealer they have our wagons in their data base, so they'll tell you what you need.

    3. for the factory rack you'd have to drill holes in your roof... as far as damage thats all up to how good you install :P its very hard to find one though, so good luck :)

I was wondering about that about the price and yes I like the round bars better.

About the junkyard, I figure a lot of wagons I see around my area/city (Toronto) are daily drivers. I dont see any wagon enthusiast around my city. I will let u know if I found any.

ebay is your friend. tons o' yakima stuff on there.
On the new wagon i'm using aerostar or exploder tracks, then yakima railrider towers. I don't like the way their (yakima's) recommended method attaches, hooks over the doorjambs.

Ok I went to Thule website and did got this stuff on their data base for the my 91 wagon:

OPTION 1 | ROOF MOUNT SYSTEM
    BASE PRODUCT
    400XTR Rapid Aero | RB43 Rapid Load Bars | 88 Fit Kit

which is somewhere around 4 bills cdn.

My confusing part for me is do you have to buy all of this separately? I know that the cargo box and snowboard/ski holders you have to but what about the bars and those things listed above?

    I'm so confuse :?
  • those look exactly like the stock racks on my bronco II

yeah that had me confused for a while too. same with Yakima, you have to buy the crossbars and clips and everything separate. :?

check out Yakima's newer website, www.yakima.com its much easier to follow now.

  • wagodizzlewagodizzle Council Member and EDM expert

Does anyone of you know if this type of roofrack (sportrack) will fit to the wagon? They don't have the option for the wagon on the fitment guide just wondering if this would fit.

    http://www.sportrack.com/cgi-bin/FitGui ... /index.cgi

PS: actually nevermind since I can't delete this post. I found the specific type for wagon.

Just wondering if anyone used one of this type of roofrack seems to be reasonable price if you're on a budge?
  • bam-bambam-bam Council Member
As long as you're not scared to drill holes in your roof, you can just pick a rack from the junkyard for <$20. Most of them are pretty easy to trim to length and width. I'm using one from a Ford Aerostar for pebbles' new ride.
  • khemistrykhemistry New Wagonist
    I don't think I'll be scared.

Can anyone give me what are the other alternates for roof racks other than the Aerostar mentioned above and the year please?
