What would have to blow to kill a starter?

Morning !!
Drove to the local RONA (Canadian competitor to Home Despot) last nite to pick up some lumber for my ongoing renos. I bought my stuff, got into the car, and... nothing !!!
I jiggled the starter wires, I tapped on it, I backed off the floor mat to make sure the clutch sensor was working, etc...
I seem to have power (radio, lights, horn, etc. work) but the car won't turn over.
My brother came over and we tried boosting... but to no avail.
I finally called CAA and had the car towed (the guy showed up with a flatbed !!) to my local mechanic's shop last night. He will have a look at it today.
Your suggestions/potential solutions are welcome!!

My mechanic gave it a good rap with a hammer and the car started right up...
Well, not back for a $40 starter I got last spring.
My mechanic found me a good deal on another one, with a 5-year warranty.
Hurrah, I'm back on the road !!
he said WHAT would have to blow...
lolol, Hayden, you have first hand experience with this..?
