Cheap paint?

I know there is a few home project ways to paint your car without an air compressor and paint gun.

i've read a lot about the entire "rolling on paint" ordeal and it just doesn't seem to safe for me.

I was wondering if I could just use spray cans of rustoleom paint?

they use rustoleom on the paint rollers for the car, so why can't the spray cans be used?

i could spray the car about 6 light layers, buff it with some rubbing compound then wash and wax?

any ideas on how this might turn out?

should work out fine, you'll have to thin it out quite a bit.

Not sure what you mean by "not safe"??

I did the roller thing 2 summers ago and I'm pleased with the results. The paint is called Armor Coat and is sold in quarts and gallons. I needed a single quart to paint the entire car. I think the whole cost outlay was about $12 with rollers and such.

However, I'll be doing some rust repairs on my car this summer and, as recommended on other posts, I'll thin the paint a bit this time.

Well, unless you are willing to invest lots of time and effort in sanding between coats and applying multiple thin coats, the results won't be "showroom quality" but will look decent to any regular person on the street.

Let us know what you decide to do.

    Cheers !!

spray can jobs will always look like a spray can job no matter what... i would research a bit more on paint rolling. there are some goood articles on Honda-Tech.

or, send you car to maaco. if you do all the prep work yourself and such i think they are like 400-600 bucks.

what kind of prep work? like sanding primer? or just sanding?

ive read A LOT about rolling on paint, but i don't have anywhere to do it. i have a carport but it'd be too dusty.

the cars basically preped man, i mean other then then bumpers and everything which i have no idea how to prep.

im going to match them with the color of the car so they dont have that plastic look. like ZC's wagon and njcivicwagon's wagon.

what kind of prep would that need?

    Rustoleum FTW:

I painted the hood and most of the driver's side of this car. Previously the door was silver and the hood was badly faded red, so I gave them a couple of coats of black primer as well to help the color change. It's certainly not the prettiest or professional looking, but I was surprised how bad it doesn't look, really. It's a 50/50 paint job - looks good from 50 feet away while going 50mph.

I still think if you are on a tight budget the roll on is not a bad thing. I did my VW bug in a dusty garage in the summer with all the windows open. Yeah some crap got stuck in the paint but after the wet sand and the buff it came out to a very nice shine and I had a very nice reflection in the paint. I would just stay away from black.

I did the Rustoleum paint job almost a year ago and it still looks pretty good. I just did a quick sanding on the original paint and then thinned the Rustoleum about 50/50 with mineral spirits. I bought a $10 spray gun at Harbor Freight and sprayed about two coats of satin black. I didn't want to worry about a shine or gloss because I'd rather it got dirty and didn't have to wash it.

Thanks, it needs to be repainted with all the scratches and shopping cart dings it get's from daily driving. I think someone keyed it at one point but I didn't think much of it since I was planning on repainting it anyway.

I got mine from Harbor Freight

Here is a listing of the Harbor Freights in NC

When I did mine I believe I bought this gun and since it was so cheap it didn't matter that I had to throw it away after I was done painting since it was only $20

I did mine about 25-50% mix and didn't have any issues with orange peel. I'd say as long as you cleaned the surface really well you shouldn't have any issue with the paint.
