VSS conversion, cable to electronic!?!?

ok so im doing the z6 head swap on my a6 block, i have the full z6 engine harness, distributor and p28 ecu. my problem is how to wire the electronic VSS from the 5G tranny and still have a functional speedo and odometer cause the wagon has a cable speedo. im only stumped on this cause in my current DD when my VSS broke it threw a CEL. do i skip the electronic VSS and stay cable or what?

any insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks

    keep the cable.

why dont you use your 4th G tranny?
  • i have a RT4wd and im not sure if having the absence of the electronic VSS would throw a CEL.

i guess i dont really know too much about this... i didnt know the cable had anything electronic on it... as far as the speed sensor is concerned.. where is that located?

if you are only doing a head swap i dont think that will be affected in any way.
  • the cable doesnt have anything electronic on it, i meant if i were to switch to a 5th gen VSS to feed the p28 ecu for the fuel maps, im not sure if it needs the VSS to do its thing

PS i have full head, intake, JDM B series TB bored to 60mm

ok i see. well in that case, i have no clue. idk whats involved in doing the OBD-1 conversion (assuming you are doing that) but would this be plug n' play?

(btw, i moved this to the Electronics section)

anywho... someone else needs to answer this for you. haha... i'm out, g'night everyone. :D
  • yes im doing the obd-1 conversion.

Yeah i'm doing a cable to electronic VSS conversion too.
Going to run an EG4 VTi cluster and the L3 cable box..
The City will be OBD1.

I'm still researching it but i'll let you know if i find anything.

from what i have read and experienced, you don't have to use the electronic vss sensor from the hydro trans. Our cable clusters have the vss unit in it. Your best bet would be to modify your oem engine harness and run a obd jumper harness. (if you do that make sure to get one for a crx/civic Si)....Or you can cut and splice wires on your ecu plug.
I ran a jumped obd1, with a speedo cable, on a hydro b16 trans with no problems.
  • ALL Honda VSS do the same thing. 4 pulses per revolution except for the S2000 and newer model cars which do some crazy linear thing.

So, cable or eleectronic from OBD0 to OBD2 is all good.

Over hear we even get to nick them from Rover's in the scrap yard (Rover and Honda had a joint venture in the late 80's)
  • ok cool, i am gonna get a rywire conversion harness. im wondering if the pigtail part of the harness is for the speedo signal. does anyone know off hand?

Here's something I read a while back. Looks like if you're going to run a VSS you're going to need to change your current cluster. It also has some good links in the write-up.
