Big thanks for ScallyWag for the very complete instructions above, and to others for suggesting the cloth method of removing the clip from the window crank. I've been having problems with the crank on my window for years, and thanks to this thread finally did something about it. Got the retainer clip on the door handle off with the cloth method--easier than a screwdriver. I didn't take out the window or lift assembly, but did the quick and dirty "put gobs of grease on the 6 points called out in the Chiltons" (ping me for a PDF diagram), rolled the window up and down about 30 times (in the beginning by lifting the window as I rolled from below), and eventually it unstuck. ScallyWag's note about cutting away the caulk to keep from destroying the vapor barrier was really helpful also. No left over parts. No (more) broken clips.
I had the same problem over the winter not being able to roll it down. Didn't think much of it since it was winter and raining anyways. So fast forward a bit, I let my friend borrow my car and he tries to roll the window down too hard and breaks the crank and now it just spins. What do I need/ have to do to get this all fixed? It's almost summer and I want to be able to hang my arm out the window while driving again!
This thread is perfect. I bought my 89 wagovan with the driver side window regulator destroyed. Now I have the answers on how to replace it. Question though. Where would be the best place to locate one? Junkyard? Local parts store?

definitely junkyard, just check them before you pull them to make sure they are better than yours and grease them up good before installation and you shouldnt have any problems
