fender rolling

ok so i will be getting Sportmax 501 rims soon and for those that dont know these are 15x8 offset 15 so basically these wheels would rub in hard turns, weight, etc.... ANYWAYS so i managed to find a fender roller (thanks rage!) and my question is:

since my rear quarter panels have some surface rust will i run into problems doing this? i would think that rusted metal would crack and not bend smoothly. my rust is mainly on the lip that i would roll... but, would it be better to actually cut this lip off or what.

the front fenders are 100% fine btw, its just the rears im sketchy about...

shut uppppppp. i wanted the 002s for a long time but thats a bit much

besides the 501s are pretty damn hot as well.

another question.. should i get the 15x8 or the 16x8

i have been debating for a long time now cause i think my Spun 15s look a bit small on my car but im afraid the 16s would cause more issues like rubbing in the wheel well. on all the pics i see of EF's with 15x8 501s they look damn hot except all those cars are SLAMMED.. i wouldnt be slammed so thats why im thinking it would look small... meh, idk..

if anything though the 15's are cheaper as well as tires are cheaper for them ;)

    decisions decisions
  • go with 16 inch and a low tire.

I think 15 is to small
  • I would personally go with the 15's. I am trying to get a set of Zender 15x8 et 0 for the wife's wagon. I like the look of the 15's vs the 16's especially with some thick tires. I just think a fat tire with the right rim will look tough on the wagon. I am afraid of the 16's on the wife's wagon because she is riding on 215/40's. I want a little more sidewall for these rough roads.

yeah i like the look of the 15's with more tire. im just wondering if the bigger lip would make the rims look even smaller...

you think i could do 16's with 50 rubber if the fenders are rolled or is that really pushing it. this is my daily driver and i have some pretty damn rough roads.

    wussy   JK ;-)

my rota's on my 5 door civic are 16 with a 195/40/16 tire on them and it was my daily drive for about 3 years. and the roads here in belgium aren't the best either. you just have to be carefull and keep an eye out for putholes etc.

but I can understand why you would go with a bigger tire.

here is an EF with 15 inch 501s.

but, the thing is slam'd to the flooo

yeah i had 17" tires on my '90 integra back in the day with 205/40/17 tires and it was perfectly fine, excecpt the teggies have bigger wheel wells.

haha too bad they dont make 15.5" wheels

in the end imma prolly go with 15... its cheaper that way and not as much risk...
  • I put 16's on the wagon with the 215/40 and had no problems with rubbing but the offset wasn't anywhere near 15. The 16x7.5 et 20(need to check wheel size) definately were going to rub.

I would go with the 15's as you will have more room for tire, and stretch. I like a little stretch to help with the travel of the tire under the fender. Little roll, little stretch and you should be good.

cool cool. most likely i would go with 195/50/15 rubber on the 15x8s. i like the stretch as well ;)

now, to answer my other question... will rust in the rear quarter panel lip be a big issue?
  • I think it really depends on the amount of rust. If you have surface rust it probably won't be a problem but if it is more than that then it will more than likely crack where it is thin.

By the way you will need a heat gun when you roll. This will soften the metal up and help roll easier.

its pretty much only surface rust, mainly on the drivers side. passenger side has almost nothing. yeah i have a heat gun here, its also good for the paint not to chip ;)

honda-boy's set up with the 195/40 R16 would be sick on a 16x8 +15 wheel. Low Profile super stretch :D

Don't cut the lip off. This is where the inner fender and the outer fender are welded together. There's actually 3 layers of metal in there, and cutting it off would compromise the body structure.

Why not go 16x8 with 225/40-16s? That'd kick ass! I currently have 17x7.5 Rotas with 205/40-17s and it looks really good with my current drop. I'm probably going 235/30-18 in the front and 285/30-18 in the back once the project gets underway  .

ok, no cutting will be done =D

dude if i had 225 rubber im sure i would be in rub city... dontcha think?! i like stretched rubber though....

but as far as low profile stretch, even thoughs its jerk-worthy, i dont think it would be too practical as a daily driver going over major dips and holes in Savannah
  • I would be worried about the streets here on a stretched tire. This argument was on another forum and everybody said stretch is better and if you are worried about curbing your wheels you should learn to drive better. However you can never know what is going to happen if you are driving everyday. I like some stretch too but the streets in some places just aren't that great and these crazy drivers over here have run me up on a few curbs.

I still think you can get away with some stretch and still have some protection on the wheels. Even a slight stretch will help them fit up under the car.

    Remember this one?

    jeepers.

but yes i remember that wago. i wouldnt go extreme stretch at all, derr. haha and curbs arent a problem for me. gosh i still cant decide fully if i want 16 or 15....
  • Not for me. The first time I curbed that wheel I would be kicking myself and everybody around me. I like a subtle roll of the tire. I have seen some wicked stretch while in Okinawa though. Them guys are nuts.

this is the craziest damn thing i've seen in a while.

haha i can imagine taking 235 rims with 1985 tires and telling the people at Tire Kingdom to mount them. they'd be like....uhhh...
  • I have run into quite a few shops with rules against stretching a tire.
  • I hope that car doesn't get driven agressively with lateral forces being applied to the tire because it looks like it could possibly break a bead.

I personally think that you should maybe go with 16's on the wagon because the arches are higher and it will help fill them. It's a hard decision that I'm glad I don't have to make. :P
