is there a stronger alternator

im planning on upgrading the alternator really soon for more juice.

well is there an alternator that will fit the stock location without any modding but will bump up the juice a bit more or a lot more?

just didnt want any headache with modding one just to get more power from the alternator.

brand?
model?
stock oem from another honda?
any links to site that might sell stronger bolt on alt's?

There are plenty of high power alts on ebay.
  • I've read that the d16z6 alt bolts on to the d16a6, but makes 5 more Amps.
Not a lot, but better than stock...and probably more reliable than the super high amp alternatives.
  • Legend one does. IIRC it's 110amps. I found one on ebay.com for about $60 or so. But shipping to UK is going to kill me.
If anything going to fit easily it'll be that.

just get one made at a local shop that make them. or do what i did i just used one from an honda accord changed the pully and moved the block mount back 4 of and inch what ever works for you. happy hunting.
  • I bought the legend one. Shipping wasn't as bad as I thought. Will update with fitment requirements when it arrives.
  • Woah momma!
It arrived to day and well it sure aint small

    For comparison:

D16 on left, Legend in middle, B16 on right.
Notice the connector position for the top one is recessed back a bit.

B16 on left, Legend in middle, D16 on right.. B16 one is a different angle to the other two. D16 has brackets down the centre line, B16 and Legend are both offset, B16 more extreme.

Looking at space in the shuttle, it'll defo fit.
Connectors are the same as stock but the main power is a 12mm M10 rather than the stock 10mm M8.

Fitting to a D series will be easy. Washer to space away from the bracket and then it should fit in ok. Might have to swap the pulley from a 4 rib to a 3 rib if it doesn't clear.

B16 fitment would be harder as the bracket on the engine is fixed at the top with two bolts, so a custom bracket is probably required.
  • Did you end up having to replace the pulley???

after the install do you notice anything?

im currently using the blue optima and that gave me better performance and over better power for all my electronics. i noticed the gain immediately.

i was not able to find anyone here that will boost the amp. there is a shop that makes them here but because of past issues with customers blowing up their cars they didnt want to be liable anymore.
  • I don't think this guys has been on here for awhile. Might want to try to PM him. I'm want to know what year Legend though.

    :D It's a 110 amp '91-'95 Legend . OEM Wgn.is 60amp.

 You wouldn't need to swap the pulley with the right spacer.

Right spacer on what?? Do you mean like move the alternator back or something with the pulley??

This might be more involved. After further examination you'll need a custom lower brkt.(or adptr plate) or 1 out of another Honda if you can find one that fits...and a spacer for the top brkt.Legend pulley stays.

Do you think it would be a good idea to swap pulleys too?

reread my posting.I edited it after you posted.

Main reason not to pulley swap=got to do a custom brkt anyway.Other reasons not to swap:
    1)pulley fit
    2)supercharger
    3)less work

    Good to know!
  • I fitted my legned alt to my engine, bottom located OEM.
Top needed some washers to fit a gap of about 10mm.
    No big problem.
It fitted and worked after that without issue.

after the original question, i was able to talk to some people that make alternators and was educated a little bit on this subject. i did ask if i used a much higher amp what would happen vs. using a higher volt.

if you use higher volts its kinda ok to do that. if you over amp it you will fry out your components.

they also told me there are some online ebay stuff that says its higher amps but it really isnt. so you might be paying more for something that isnt going to be what you think your buying. if you plug in an alternator that really is about double your original amprage your stuff in your car should blow out on the first day or so. he said that even with me juicing it up to about 90 amps from the stock 60 amps, there is going to be damages as well.

so becareful and keep us informed with what you end up doing and how it went after the install. :D

I would like to upgrade the original (60amp) to 80amp. Is it over amp so it can fry out components?
