kraftwerks supercharger... ?

  • $2900, no piping, no IC, no fuel mgmt.

    - Kit REQUIRES Custom Fabrication for Intercooler + Piping and Engine Tuning
    - Kit REQUIRES removal of A/C Compressor and Power Steering
    - Kit REQUIRES header that has narrow pairing

Gonna nope right out of that one.

I can barely find any examples on the internet of these things being installed. Two videos on Youtube from the same guy, but he's using a smaller trim SC than the kit offers and at d-series.org they are kinda tearing it apart in their thread from 3 years ago. I think the price point and all the extra stuff needed killed this product for them.
  • Thanks superhatch. Those were my initial reactions as well (and my searches have come up pretty empty too).

Prolly not alone in wishing the JRSC's were still being made... Oh well..,
  • There is one on ebay right now for 2.2k. Holy Shi8!

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CRX-CIVIC-DEL-SOL-SINGLE-CAM-SOHC-D15-D16-1-5-1-6-JRSC-TURBO-SUPERCHARGER-/121804850578?hash=item1c5c228592:g:pU4AAOSwo0JWN5Vu&vxp=mtr

I bought and sold mine for about 1k. Guess they are not getting any cheaper. For that price a small turbo with a small IC and small charge piping would be so much more cost effective and still net more power.
  • Thanks for looking out superhatch! I've been watching that auction for a bit... Got me searching for cheaper / newer alternatives but there really doesn't seem to be any out there (at least supercharger setups).

I had wanted the linear power curve and the instant / low end power from the supercharger but might end up going turbo just because of the economics of the whole thing.

    Will keep my eyes open

    Thanks again
  • My only issue with the JRSC for the D series is that if you slapped it on a stock A6 you would net about 35hp and 30tq. Even at 1k for the unit you still need an ECU and tuning, so maybe 1750 total? For 30hp it just doesn't seem worth it.

This guy has pulleys, ported M45, I/H/E, injectors, TB, meth kit and a y7 and his numbers were 154/131. http://www.d-series.org/forums/forced-induction/129622-w-m-jrsc-d16y7-dynod.html

An ebay turbo kit for $600 will net you about 200/180 with potential for much more. There is a Wagon from BoostedBois running an ebay turbo at 450hp on a Z6 with just larger B-series head studs. But...thats with a t3/t4 which is probably a little large for instant power. A 15g would work nicely and you can pick them up used for a few hundred.

So for about the same price as the JRSC+ecu+tuning you could have a turbo setup making 200/180 instead of 150/130 with a similar rpm response but also potential for more if you wanted in the future. I owned an older SCed mini cooper s with a lot of work and it was super fun but I think for the d-series engines turbos just make more sense. If you were going B or K I would be more open to a SC because they get larger blowers and way more power.

  • man... is that your supercharged mini in that link? looks fun as hell...

some good info in that thread and lots to consider. i'm definitely open to all solutions -- i just want more power (especially lower end torque). my wagon is a daily driver and i'd love to have some extra kick in the pants when accelerating / getting up to speed in city traffic (or, when i'm lucky and get to fart around in the desert). the car is never gonna be on the track -- it does go on the freeway fairly often though as i'm in soCal.

would you still recommend a turbo setup given the type of driving i do? reading around, people seem to have some good results with a smaller t25 turbo setup on d-series engines.

This is a really great tool to play around with to help determine which type of turbo you want.

A swap would be another option. I had a DOHC ZC in my first wagon that made the car feel a lot better better and they are about 1k from Hmotors online.

I think the first thing you need to do is set a reasonable budget. Once you have that number in place you can start to view different options, what power they make, how reliable they are and what technical level you need to complete them from start to finish. Do you have a 2wd or 4wd wagon?
  • great resource, thanks. my wagon is 4wd -- and definitely wanna keep it that way (love that super low gear!)... although the b series swap is definitely seductive and i've seen people doing rad stuff with b series and crv transmisions (a bit beyond the scope of what i'm capable of though).
  • That swap would get pricey too.

You could also look into junkyard turbos.

    http://www.homemadeturbo.com/forced-induction-7/noobs-*look-here-if-you-want-build-turbo-kit-*-all-info-stock-wg-settings-27245/

Thats a good thread if you want to do a kit on the cheap...or it was. Now with ebay kits I don't know if you can even do a junkyard kit for cheaper.

    Turbo:
    Ebay kit: 600
    S300: 150
    Tuning: 300
    Magnaflow muffler, 2.5": 80
Custom 2.5" exhaust (no RT specific exhaust on the market: 400?
    ARP head studs: 115

    $1,645 + random shite = 2k (180+/150+ to wheels)

    DOHC ZC:
    http://www.angelfire.com/dc/igone/zcswap.html
Motor: 1k + 150 shipping (cali) (or free pickup in Burbank, CA)
    ECU 89 Integra: $50

    $1200 + random shite = 1500 (115/100 whp?)

D16A6 fresh is 90/85 whp or so.

The differences is that the ZC will likely have zero issues, be more fun (revs to 7200), and can still be boosted/na built later on. The turbo setup might have no issues...but it probably will at some point. It's not a guarantee but the likelihood of problems is higher for sure.

The ZC seems not as much fun for the near the same price as the turbo...but its a lot more fun than an A6 or Z6 imo.
  • ...and now I've changed my plans from a Z6 to a ZC. lol
  • haha -- it's a pretty persuasive argument... thinking i'll need to rebuild my engine either way -- might make the most sense to get a replacement instead. a quick question, the HP and torque numbers for the engines that they quote on their site, those are power at the crankshaft, yeah (and not wHP)?
  • ^ Correct.
