Wife should never see this thread (how much $ we have spent)

Hello guys,

So it has been a few years since I have been building my wagon, and I wonder how much is too much spent on our lovely cars?

Do any of you keep tabs or have a rough idea of how much money does our hobby swallow?

I have spent about ~10'000 euro in my estimation so far, and I still need good new brakes, various engine upgrades, steering rack upgrade, swaybars, sound system and a few interior bits.

  • I bought a wagon for 5k, and have about 4.5k into it so far and I haven't even started on the Z6 build.

I think that people spend money on their hobbies. Some people airsoft, some people buy lots of games, some are into bicycles, crafting, woodworking, skiing, etc. Working on cars is my hobby...it's where I spend my money and get enjoyment from the work I do with my own hands. I think that there isn't anything wrong with spending your own money on something you love doing.

Now if it's an obsession and you're putting off other things like buying a house, paying for stuff for your kids etc...then you just have a problem. lol

I don't even want to know.
  • I'm at least a good 5 grand in to mine after paying 1300 for it, and haven't even touched the motor.

This is the best reply ever. :D

Superhatch, I agree that spending money on the hobby is the right thing. Also, our hobby is way cheaper then for example racing is.

I just find it interesting that we put so much time and effort into silly cheap wagons that are just so cool at the end!

yeah....3 motors, shocks, quickrack, and a lot of spherical bearings later. I'd really rather just not.

What quickrack did you use? Also, does anyone have a quick one that keeps the power steering?

I sold my last wagon for 4500.

And that was the budget for the new project. I blew through that 4500 on my new wagon in minutes. Had to buy it- fly to Phoenix to get it. Drive it back. A couple of "rare" interior parts. Tint. Professional cut and buff. RT wheels. New Tires. and that was about all that 4500 bought.
I probably have spent 2000 since... maybe more.? That is terrible to think about.

The problem is- its a terrible investment. lols. SO if right now I'm 6500 in to it--- I could never recoup that money- even in a part out situation. Same with my last wagon- I was probably 10,000 plus in to that one.

But the odd little machine brings me so much joy for some reason. I don't know why I like it and continue to blow money on it?

Don't think of your car as an investment. It is a liability... unless it's an exotic.

I prefer not to think about how much I have spent on sundries/OE parts, let alone the rest of it...

I am currently over $20K invested in restoring my 1963 Ford Thunderbird, was about $15K into my Evo IX (track setup), over $9K into my billiard hobby ($6K for the table, $3K in cues).

A year of owning the RT4WD and I have about $700 into it (studless snow tires and a timing belt kit)... It's so cheap to own these cars! I love it :)

If I had a wife, she would learn to deal with it or it wouldn't be a good fit.

Quaife and you have to use a dx rack and subframe. No, but you can use a quickener.

I bought mine for $3,000, I had about $1,800 into a full paint job, and about $1,400 into a full OEM motor rebuild, and with everything else I'm estimating $9k-$10k all together.

But it I have owned her for almost 5 years and I have loved every minute, I love driving it.

Sorry, I can't tell ya. She could find this thread. It would be uncomfortable. I would be called out on multiple downright lies and well-timed redirects. So, sorry, I cannot tell you how much I have spent on my Wagon. Hope you understand. :indecisiveness:
  • Bought my RT for $2000, paid $500 for my complete bullbar, I'm about $800 or so into my minime swap, paid $125 for my Nardi, and $60 for my prelude fronts. Also going to be paying $300 this weekend for EDM front, corner, and tailights along with a rear fog. So all in all I'm about $3800 into mine so far in about 2 years. Gonna be completely refreshing the suspension, drivetrain, and painting it over the next few years, so I'm sure I'll be closer to $7000-8000 by then.
