My new basketcase rt4wd

Hi all,
Im Bill from md and i just recently picked up this RT4WD for cheap in an attempt to save it. I'm going to be chronicling my adventure trying to sort out some of the previous owners "Improvements" (i use the term lightly) but it is a 91 5 speed, d16z6 swapped and the transmission, engine and 4wd seem to be in very good order.
I dont have too much Honda experience ive done some work on a eh hatch, I mainly deal with the older watercooled VW's, so this should prove to be a learning experience!
On to the pics!

attachment.php?attachmentid=3157&d=1441431785
The bad stuff: Broken rear window, Broken driver window regulator (already got one), speedometer doesn't work, but that all pales in comparison to the attempted "Wire tuck" on the car....
attachment.php?attachmentid=3161&d=1441431785
obd 0 to 1 harness... what a mess. Throws a vtec pressure sensor code.. because the wire wasn't attached to anything..
attachment.php?attachmentid=3170&d=1441431805
Crimp connectors.. exactly what we want to see in the harness.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3175&d=1441431805
Engine bay box stuffed under the dash.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3154&d=1441431785
No idea what this is going to, but its hot and is exposed, coming from AC fuse on the box (ac is removed.. along with heater core.. why....)
attachment.php?attachmentid=3152&d=1441431785
wires jumped with a 2 foot long piece for no reason...
attachment.php?attachmentid=3164&d=1441431785
power distribution! First major thing being addressed. Battery was moved to trunk.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3171&d=1441431805
Bad ground which prevented the car from starting when I looked at it.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3153&d=1441431785
Wipers? Just cut it.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3159&d=1441431785
Same with the reverse lights.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3167&d=1441431785
Anybody know what these are to??

Then on to the body:
attachment.php?attachmentid=3177&d=1441431805
Creased hood.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3151&d=1441431785
Bumper Gap
attachment.php?attachmentid=3176&d=1441431805
attachment.php?attachmentid=3178&d=1441431805
Bacon Fenders.

The good stuff??
attachment.php?attachmentid=3165&d=1441431785
d16z6 a bunch of aftermarket parts, no pcv hose? I found one in the glove box with the nipples and plugs...
attachment.php?attachmentid=3168&d=1441431785
Brake lines tucked
attachment.php?attachmentid=3163&d=1441431785
Hidden prop valve
attachment.php?attachmentid=3160&d=1441431785
attachment.php?attachmentid=3172&d=1441431805
F&F type 2, adjustable Uca's and toe rods.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3173&d=1441431805
attachment.php?attachmentid=3166&d=1441431785
Parts found in the back seat. Diff mounts and crossmember bushings
attachment.php?attachmentid=3155&d=1441431785
Speaker pods no grills.
attachment.php?attachmentid=3158&d=1441431785
Some random seats??

I think this is going to be my best friend through this project

    Welcome along. :)
  • Welcome to the board. You are an american hero for saving this wagon
  • Welcome, seems like a nice project car, I am glad you saved the wagon, these are rare, and when you fix it up I promise it will turn ALL the heads your way.
  • Nice save!!
    Welcome to the wagon life!!

Picked up a drivers front window regulator from amayama.com. Came in a week, half an hour and it was in.
  • I hope that brake line tuck was done with more skill than the wire tuck. SCARY.

Will be a great car with a little love!
  • You picked a good one! Lots of patience and a bit of money will get it back into shape. Welcome!

It seems the brakes were done before the last owner. They look fairly safe to me.

Been a while since I posted. Things are coming along on the wagon. Not as fast as expected but I haven't had much time to work on it.
All front harnesses re-done and re routed.attachment.php?attachmentid=3203&d=1447211838
    attachment.php?attachmentid=3202&d=1447211660
Ripped out all of the old power cables. This was the connection between the battery, fuse box and alternator... Quality Work.
    attachment.php?attachmentid=3200&d=1447211660
Finished rerouting and wrapping everything in the cabin, moved the fuse box and put some power distribution blocks.attachment.php?attachmentid=3199&d=1447211660
had some down time waiting on parts so I refinished the wheels.attachment.php?attachmentid=3201&d=1447211660
Polished them up after that.. apparently didn't take a picture.
Rewired the wipers, they work except the intermittent. Car came with an extra wiper switch so I'm going to check that.
Next i have to make a battery mount in the trunk.. nothing seems to fit beside the trap door thing for the spare.
Then it needs a ball joint and replacing differential mounts. Going to fit a universal heater/defroster under the dash.

Good job cleaning the wiring up but there is nothing wrong with crimping the engine harness. Honda does that from the factory.

I agree that some crimps may not be a big deal, however when i went to start the car go move it into the shed, it would not start because one of the wires had came free from the crimp. I gave the few crimped wires a tug and 2 of them came right out. That was when I decided any wiring that had been touched was going to be redone.
  • Wow, just wow! Good on ya for taking on that mess. Counting myself lucky for finding 3 of these that are worn, but basically stock and unmolested. The seats look like CRX Si. Welcome and congratulations.

Oh well that isn't any good haha.

Started it up today for the first time since I ripped all the wiring apart. Getting a code 8 tdc sensor code. Going to look at the wiring and test for open faults.. if its not that I guess its a distributor issue?? Also speedometer and vtec code fixed!

    *********
Found more bad connections further down in the distributor harness. Just twisted together and taped. No more code 8!
