rear doors won't open

As most of you know, I picked up a 91 wagon with rt4wd. I am having a problem with the rear doors. Basically I can't open the rear doors either from the inside or outside. It seems like the lock mechanisms are not releasing when the lock is opened. Is there any way to fix this without having to remove the door panel as I'm not sure I can even remove the door panels with the doors closed. Can I jimmy the locks open? Thanks!

i am a bit unclear, are the doors unlocking but not opening or are they not even unlocking?

my rear doors unlock/lock but don't open unless i push in on the door, pull up on the handle, then pull out. i've tried adjusting them many times and this is as good as i can get them.
  • I can unlock/lock both rear doors but when pull up on either the inside or outside handles, the neither door opens. I'll try your method in the meantime.
  • When I pulled my wagon out of storage last spring, I had the same trouble... the rear door locks where stuck in the lock position. I could only move the little thumb switch up a short distance, but not far enough to actually unlock it. I just kept working it up and down... (kinda gently because I didn't want to break anything) and eventually they un-stuck them selves and have been fine ever since.

    good luck
  • It's probably rusted fast. Some trucks that came into work (I work at a used car dealership) that were only 3-5 years old would have the rear doors stuck shut because the mechanism thingy would rust because they were never used.

This morning I tried playing with the passenger side lock. Basically I just opened and closed the lock and it eventually ended up unlocking all the way, allowing the opening of the door. Thanks for the tip. Now I need to work on the driver's side. And fix all the rust. And figure out how to get better gas mileage. But I'll save those problems for another post. Thanks again!
