Best way to help my cars cancer.

Ok I have a slight problem, my car has some pretty big rust spots on both rear fenders and the rear hatch. Don't know exactly how bad because it was night, car has no plates yet and it isn't at my house. Anyway rather than spending a lot of money taking it to a body shop, anysuggestions on fixing the rust?

  • mine didn't look to serious at first until I started scraping the rust off.

then what I thought was a little rust turned into this

but I had some really good rust neutralizing paint from Eastwood.com and a welder. I welded some metal plating behind the holes on the inside of the fender well. Then I made a new lip because mine was completely eaten by rust, and spotwelded some new metal on the inner fender well.

These pictures haven't been rotated of course. I would see just how bad the rust is. If it isn't too bad I would get some really good paint to neutralize the rust. Por-15 worked pretty good for me but it doesn't like UV too much so you have to top coat it. The stuff from Eastwood is better. Cover the rust and fill and you should be good to go. Of course having the rust completely removed is the best way to go but I didnt' want to go to a body shop either. It would cost more to fix that one side than fix the whole car so we will see how long my fix lasts. So far i haven't had any rust show back up through the paint.

    Good luck
  • When I get the chance to I'll see just how bad it is, then let you know how it goes. Thank you for the advice, it is much appreciated.
  • It probably isn't the best advice but it will keep my wagon on the road a little longer and it seems to be holding up pretty good. I only tacked the lip on and it is still holding on strong. I also tacked some metal on behind the holes to help the fill better. My repair estimate was about 1000 bucks (euro vs dollar) and I paid about 1500 (usd) for the car so I thought it best to try and repair it myself first.

The best advice is to repair it the right way and have it cut out but some of us don't have that luxury.

Good luck and hopefully it isn't too bad.

it will never be completely gone and will always come back no matter how freaking hard you try. grrrr.
  • I know I won't ever truly get rid of it but I can sure as hell try and slow it down.
  • So I just talked to one of my older sister's inlaws, he is a master welder and does neuron welding or something like that, anyway though he is on of only 5 people in the whole U.S. that can do it, and he will be helping me with my wagon. His brother, my brther in-law's uncle, is a metal fabricator and will more than like ly help with the fabrication of new fenders WOOHOO :D
