The right gearbox

OK so i'm having a bit of trouble finding the right gearbox... I've decided to go cable clutch and cable speedo drive so that the swap is easier.

This leaves me to believe i need an L3 transmission, maybe from a 1991 so i can use the larger flywheel/clutch combo? I also don't want to use the "ZC L3" because of the need for different sized outputs and the need for the intermediate shaft.

Anyone know which Japanese Civic used these? I'm actually thinking the only one might be a 56i Shuttle.

  • I assume you want the SI transmission. I don't know how it works over there but I will tell you how Honda did things here in the US.

The SI and EX transmissions had larger bearings at the differential, and these are currently the only bearing size for which you can get an aftermarket lsd(that I'm aware of). The inner bearing diameter of the differential bearing on these is 40mm, and the small bearing trannys are 35mm. The ZC transmission has the large bearing case, so if you intend to replace the differential one of these will work the same. Also the outer diameter of the bearings are different as well, so you can't buy a "small" case and expect to put "big" differential bearings in it.

Thats from my experience with my hatch. The ZC trans that I had a 4.43 final drive and SI 1-5 gearing (which is not how it is "supposed" to be), so there is a very, very small chance that the "normal" ZC trans is small bearing; I would be very shocked if this were the case.

I'm not aware of the swap your doing, so if you're talking about RT4WD transmissions, then I know nothing.

    i hope this helps. http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/gearratiosdseries.htm

    From what i have read
    A000/A100 = small bearing case
    3000/6000/9000/B000 = big bearing case

Cable are all PL3. The big bearing case transmissions are the ones you want to get. They are the ones with better ratios. you can find those numbers by the oil filler plug.
  • I don't fully approve of that link......esp. when the 92-95 info I provide, but the 88-91 is messed up in some areas. I also figured out the casting codes for everyone.

So you wanna stay cable tranny.........

    89-91 = 20 spline, use a 90-2000 212mm clutch/pressure plate/flywheel.

Small bearing (35mm) LSD's do still exsist, I have a 35 mm Quaife right now that I'm able to sell for a racer. It also has the sleeves to run 40mm bearings as well, old KAAZ trick.

eldonciv777, your ZC tranny sounds like a Teg SOHC, Zxi I believe.

    old info........

  • Yeah, I knew quaife had made a 35mm diff but I was unsure of its current availability as I had been told it was no longer sold.
  • what they did was add the 35mm to 40mm spacer and unloaded them. HART (Honda America Racing Team) Factory team used on, a buddy bought their SCCA SCC car.

He'll go $650 shipped, figure it has 8k RACE miles on it, or less. He might keep it for his brothers ITA Civic which I'll have the sleeves TIG welded onto the case to prevent them from walking off AGAIN.

Thanks mate, that's the exact info i needed. This means i won't have too many issues getting her in there and running.

And yeah i'm guessing the ZXi teg uses the same transmission as the 56i Shuttle as they both ran the same motor, too.
