who makes the best internal parts for the wagon?

well it kinda seems to me that i might have to open up the engine to fix a seal or something. i noticed the oil is much darker and became darker sooner then normal. the oil also seems to burn off alot in between oil changes. another thing i noticed is that the exhaust has more soot. so before i take it out for a proper evaluation i thought you guys might know what it might be making it do that. my assumption is that something like a seal or something is gone.

if i do need to open it up i might as well upgrade the internal parts. so who makes all the needed parts and which company makes really good parts for the D16 engines? i wanted to just upgrade everything in there. hopfully it will make it last longer but also allow me to bring up the rpm range really high. i plan on keeping the car so i dont mind investing some mid-range to high range internals. performance part upgrades basically.

since i am a novice here, the only thing i do know to change are these parts: (but have no clue on what named companies make them or which ones are good, meaning they will be the best fitment and quality)

pistons
cams
sleeves
rods

so any advice would be totally appreciated.

  • Does the oil smell like fuel? My hatch had never leaked or used oil but suddenly started deteriorating oil extremely fast, and it would use insane amounts after 2200ish miles. Up to 2200 miles it wouldn't use a drop. I believe the problem may have been leaky injectors.

I switched injectors with other supposed good used ones and the oil no longer smelled like fuel but the oil still broke down superfast. I believe this may have been due to the excess bad oil that stays in the motor when oil gets changed (aka, it doesn't all drain out). My intentions were to run about couple of cheap oils through it for 500-1000 miles and change it a couple of times in a row to clean out the motor, but I never got around to it. I only ran about two changes of oil through it until I parked it recently, so I don't know if that fixed it, but it may be a place to start.
  • sounds to me like the piston rings are starting to fall apart. what kind of mileage do you have on that engine? for parts, just use hatchback Si parts (if it 4wd)

thanks guys. anyone else who wants to give any input please continue.

today i did my oil change. the oil was black as it could be also it was down to about 1.5 quarts when i took it out.

when i finished the oil change i noticed that it started to smoke out of the back of the engine. i dont know if its cause the oil residue from removing the oil filter and the dripping of oil, but when i took out the oil dip stick to check the oil there was smoke comming out of it. i had the engine on so i can check for any leaks. the engine was on for just a minute and it was already smoking out of the dipstick. i guess that would be a clue for someone who knows what is going on.

i have about 80k miles on it.

i dont want to use old parts or stock ones if i can upgrade those particular part.

i am going to start shopping for internal parts now. so far i got some advice on these parts to just upgrade all the internal that is needed to get it to be boosted and rev higher. if anyone here knows if this is wrong or any advice just post it up.

    ARP Head Studs
    Arp Rod Bolts.
    New piston rings
    New Bearings
    D16 Vtec Oil Pump
    Valve Springs

i dont know what this is tho,
"If you want more Power then some low compression pistons and A CAM."

when i find someone who can help me do this, probably at a shop. what questions should i ask?
do i need to make sure this place knows how to hone?
  • IMHO:

    For NA:

ZC pistons. If you want some I might be able to hook you up with some used ones cheap. They will bump the compression quite a bit.

Also use a head gasket from the D16Z6 which will do the same plus it's a metal one rather than fibre (least the UK D16A6 has fibre gaskets).

Use the zealautowerks calculator to work it out.

I work it out to 11.08:1

    For boost:

Swap the rods for Tuner Toys because they are very cheap and you wont have to worry about them breaking. They come with ARP bolts and you are doing the bearings as a matter of course so it's not that much more.

Then go for Vitara pistons. Fairly low comp, but you can bump that a bit higher by using the Z6 head gasket again. But, really you need to consider a head skim if doing this.

If I go for Vitara's I'm going to use a Z6 head (because it'll rev higher and have a bigger cam for less than it'd cost to do the same to a A6 head and has a smaller chamber) and give it a skim to get back up to 9:1 static.

You can take a LOT off a Honda head.
I took 2mm off a B20Z non VTEC head before mating it to a B16 bottom end in bit of an odd experiement. Masses of torque for a B series but no top end. It was fun for a few weeks

The other (perhaps better) option is to save up and get some of the cheaper forged pistons, if you can budget for it?

Also, replace all the seals you can find. Whilst you've got it all in pieces it's a no brainer due to the age and mileage on it.
