When I fill up it goes just above half tank. 3 miles later it's at empty. What is the probably. How do I test out the sending unit? I can't find one can I take it from another EF?

It should just be a float inside the tank, as it moves through its range it alters the resistance of the circuit and thus the voltage to the gauge
I would check that the float isnt bent or damaged and then I guess the next thing would be the resistor track which it runs on could be worn?
At least thats how a fuel level sender has worked on another car I have worked on
