Oil light stuck on..

So I searched the threads for an answer and didnt find anything that was quite the same issue.

So when I start my car the oil light isn't on. About 30 seconds later it starts flickering and then stays on.
I checked the oil, its full.

I do have a leak that is coming from what looks like the oil pan.

From what I've read about this it could be a number of things. But more importantly low oil pressure.
1. The oil leak 2. The oil sending unit. 3. A clogged oil pump. 4. A faulty oil pump.

Im going to tear into it tomorrow fix the leak, check the sensor and clean the pump.
And see if I can get this dummy light to shut off.

My question is; what else could it be? Or am I on the right track? Anything else I could be over looking?

Its a d15b2 automatic.

Thanks guys :)

You're on the right track... I'd setup a pressure gauge to see if the pump is working before you tear it all apart. That way your'e not taking it apart multiple times.

    Good luck, update us please!

btw- definitely stop driving it until you figure it out!
  • Thanks for the advice. I will be sure to update when I figured it out!
  • It would be a a pretty good indication that if it was flickering on and off etc that its most likely the oil sensor right? I mean if the oil pump was clogged it would just stay on right? Or if it was faulty? If the sensor didnt flicker on and off I wouldn't have mentioned it. By its not "constantly on" I guess ill find out. Haha.
  • I'd swap out the oil pressure sensor for a new one before I did anything else. Super cheap and easy to do. Always start at the cheapest option when you're shooting in the dark or throwing parts at it lol.
  • Would it run any different if the oil pump was faulty or clogged? Cause it drives fine. Smokes. By drives normal.

It would start knocking as all the bearings start to shit themselves due to no oil for lubrication. I would really really avoid driving it until you know for sure that you have oil pressure. You are just going to destroy your motor if it turns out you oil pump has failed
  • Unfortunately I have no other means to work. Ive driven it about 200 miles since I picked it up last weekend. So far no signs of a knock, im hoping thats a good sign? I know Im really pushing my luck but I have no real choice atm :-/. So tomorrow the engine bay is getting a deep steam cleaning, oil change, valve adjustment and oil pressure switch replaced.

Also, I noticed when looking at the pressure sensor that its covered in oil.

We shall see how it goes! and hopefully ill have some "good" news. Wish me luck lol.
  • Well...did the oil change, changed the sensor and the lights still on. Drove it home and it started knocking HARD. Officially dead.. still turns over luckily, but its jacked. Getting it towed home now. Dead sadness.

Yea that light means "STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY!" as it comes on when you have less than 5psi oil pressure. Basically if you see it come on then its too late and damage has been done
  • Yep the motors toast.

But luckily for me I am swapping in a jdm d15 vtec w/ 70k mileson wednesday.

Damn oil pump.. thanks for the advice guys. Live and learn right?

Got to give it credit, it lasted a long time with the light on before giving up!

My girlfriend ran her SR18de Nissan Primera out of oil and drove 80km with none it in, topped it up (3.5L out of a 4L sump!) and did another 7000kms before it started knocking. This was before I met her
  • bummer deal on the engine. glad you have a swap.
  • Damn that's pretty impressive! That's why I thought the sensor was bad. I didn't think the engine would have done what it did with the pump. Sucks.

Yeah it was pretty damn lame, but such is life.
