88 4wd into 91 2wd wagon

I have a 91 wagon 2wd AT and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what roadblocks i may run into by swaping the 4wd and MT from a wrecked 88 4wd to my 91 2wd?

um, not an expert.. but im pretty sure for the most part its all bolt on.. you might have a hard time hooking up the shifter since its cable.. umm, yeah..
  • Are the rear suspension components compatible?

yeah, the 4wd strut will make the car just a teeny bit higher, meaning, your car will sit like 1/4 inch higher or something...
  • will there be any cutting for the AT to MT with cables conversion?

um that im not sure... Kahuna did a AT -> MT conversion but that was for a 2WD.. im pretty sure there will be a little cutting, but most likey not a lot... if you are for the most part mechanically inclined and have a but of experience with Hondas you should be able to pull this off pretty easy...

  • How about front axles are they the same as 2wd?

    oh word, i dont know..

the 2WD driver side is much longer then the pass. side axle...

i have no clue though if the 4WD has the same or if they are equal length half shafts... that you'de have to check out yourself ;) one thing im not sure of as well is whether the front hub/knuckles are any different, i remember readin once that they are... but i cant confirm..

if i was you i'd just change out the entire drivertrain, basically, front hub/knuckles, rear trailing arms, axles, etc from the 4WD to the 2WD

 i should let someone else who actually knows what they are talking about answer this
  • the right rear has suspension damage from the collision are upper control arms the same as 2wd

upper control arms as in those dinky little things that connect the top of the big arm thingy with the hubs/brakes/etc to the body? (now you are prolly super confused)

but if thats what you are talking about then YES they are the same, heck, you can even get those on ebay or something AKA "camber kits"

    Cutting. Welding. Tapping.

If you can't do those then don't bother. :)

Some 1 on this board or the OG site did the 2WD to 4WD conversion.

Left side is different. It's a better design.

Cutting a hole to run the shift cables.Sealing the AT hole in the tunnel. No short shifter for the 4WD.

 Just doing the AT 2 Manual is a project on it's own.
 Consider swapping the clutch pedal assembly out of a Civic Sdn LX or EX.It's the same except it's set-up for cruise, then later you can add cruise or not.
  • The reason i was asking about the control arm is becuase of the collision damage and the ability to utilize my good 2wd parts. the trialing arm is obviously different for the 4wd. I own a collision/restoration shop so cutting, welding and tapping are no problem. Were you refering to the shifter only or the entire swap for cutt, weld, tap? is this swap more trouble than its worth, should I sell out & just buy a 4wd? my 2wd is already tight & I can get the wrecked 88 4wd for $300. Labor, lifts, tools, resources no problem! how much modifieing will be ness?
  • thanks that was helpfull! why the difference in the frame mount, couldnt u just change mounts AT-MT?
  • SiWagonSiWagon Council Member
You do just swap the AT-MT mounts.
