water leaking into tail light compartment

My honda is leaking water from rain inside the rear tail light compartment. It happens after raining. I have garaged my honda since day 1 but being out during the day clearly has made it possible for this to happen. What is leaking? The gasket at the top of the wagon tailgate?, the tail lights themselves? ( This happens to both L and R rear tail lights)/. Need some help here. I want this car to stay with me. Any insight? Thanks.

so you are getting water like next to the spare tire area under the plastic storage bins...?
because i do after a hard rain..and its because of the gasket around the rear tails. very simple to change out, i geuss order from Honda.. idk where else :?

well, i hope this answers your Q ;)

Yep, definately a tail light gasket issue by the sounds of things.

as Gene Hackman would say " that was failing common to that model" and sadly it is very common with our era Hondas.
You can get new gaskets. Many people resorted to ENDING the problem forever by using liberal amounts of Silicone, replacing the gaskets with something that won't dry and shrink over time :)

You could also drill tiny holes in the bottom of those taillights for drainage.

    good luck either way

That happens from the foam gasket behind the taillight. Clsmooth (one of our members) traced that foam gasket onto a computer mouse pad then cut it out and used the mouse pad as the replacement gasket. He said it successfully worked. try that out.

Wow that's an exact description of what happens to one of my wagons.
  • we don't get water in the spare tire tub or anything, but in the plastic side pockets/buckets under the rear windows. but not then always.

    thats what i meant

my spare tire tub itself never gets water, just under the storage bins on the side.

I'm not sure about new ones, but I used a thin layer of black RTV on both sides of the gasket and solved the problem. Later I found fresher gaskets on another car but still used silicone for insurance.

get a mouse pad, cut it to shape, and use that :P
