I really need some help. It's about getting power.

Here is the situation. My cousin, who happens to be egotistical and competitive, has always down talked my wagon (89 DX) because he has a 93 Mercedes 190E (which actually is in bad shape and is on the verge on breaking down). Well now he keeps bragging he is going to get a BMW Z4, and he is an idiot enough to get a loan for it and pay high interest. He keeps trash talking EVERYONE'S car now. My question is.... how can I tune my wagon to get more horsepower than a Z4?

  • ehhh, sounds like your cousin has a personality disorder. Maybe he has self-esteem issues, and having a nice car makes him feel better about himself. When dealing with people like that, I usually just smile and act agreeable. "Yes, cousin, your Beemer sure is awesome... Nobody's gonna compete with your kick-ass car..."

But if you feel he just needs a beat-down by a fugly old POS Honda grocery-getter, you are gonna have to drop some serious coin. You'll probably want to swap in a B18, and then turbo it. Don't even bother with little upgrades to what you have because what you have is slow as balls. You could do things like exhaust, header, mpfi swap, etc and those things will give it minor improvements... but it will still be slow as balls. Just save up for a turbo and a motor swap.
  • Thanks, I new I would have to get a better engine I didn't which one. I also I have friend with '03 Civic that's want to upgrade so we can shut him up together. Anyway if I can't afford the engine soon, I always have a the BMW-porcupine joke.....

find youself a healty d16z6 to put in the car which shouldnt be a whole lot MAYBE $400 and thats if u find a cherry ass motor. i bet for 2-300 u can still get a good single cam. then turbo it i dont know how much u are wanting to spend but if u go with just a basic log mani, t3/t4 turbo, some fuel system upgrades and some good tuning i would put my un-born children on u kicking his ass and it wouldnt cost a whole lot i bet it could all be done for less than $2500 using moslty new turbo parts u can search and find sweet deals as well to keep the price down. just keep away from the ebay turbo kits.

BTW in the end of all of this u can ask him to race for pinks and then say shit i forgot u wont have yours for about 5 years.......
  • agreed to boostin the single cam. Honestly though, you'll prolly be able to dust him with the current motor you have in there if you boost it. I would definately make sure the motor is running properly for one, then swap to MPFI and OBD0 to OBD1 at the same time.

Lets see here here's a list of parts you can put together for fairly cheap:

-Volvo, Mitsubishi, Ford, etc junkyard turbo (less than $70)
-Rebuild the turbo (about $200 from www.blaastperformance.com)
-1g DSM side mount intercooler ($20)
    -DSM 450cc injectors ($40)
-1g DSM blow off valve ($40)
-nice set of oil lines ($100)
    -intercooler piping (about $100)
-CRX OEM HF manifold ($20 or less)
-adapter plate from mani to turbo (about $40)

So thats $630 in parts and i'd give it about $300 for tuning. Should be good for anywhere in between 150whp-170whp.

Also do keep in mind that the wagon will probably NEVER out handle the Z4, we know the wagon is a better chick magnet 8) , but damn near any honda or car for that matter could be modified and tweaked to go faster than a bmw z4 which isn't by any means the fastest thing on the planet. They're ugly and 9 times out of ten, their owner's attitude is uglier than the car itself. It just cant be helped sometimes.
