D15b2 Swap in rt4wd?

I recently blew the motor up in my 91 rt4wd..

I bought a d15b2 thinking it will work, but ive been reading that you cant? I want to keep RT4WD gearbox, so will this swap work? What modifications are required to make it work?? Im not a SOHC guy, so im lost in the lil single slammers. . Im ripping the stock motor out now, and i dont want to try to make the B2 fit when it Wont..

Thanks!

use the long block but swich everything from the d16a6 on to it. like intake manifold, distributor, etc.
  • Using only the bare head/block from the b2 and everything else from your old mpfi a6...
There are two things that I can think of that need test fitting/verification before saying its a straight swap:
    1. Check the bolt pattern of the RT4wd transmission and the b2 block.
    2. See if the b2 block is even tapped to take the intermediate shaft required by the rtwd tranny.
    3. The cam timing/ignition timing might be a little off but even if, should be workable.

Ive already switched the intake manfold and distibutor, so it looks exacty like the a6 i pulled out..

I havent check to see if intermediate shaft will fit because its not here at my house, its at my friends shop..

but hopefully it will all go as planned, and no real probs!

nice wagon man. im on the southwest side of town

man that was a pain in the ass. The intermediate shaft only lines up on one bolt hole, i had to switch the oil pan to the AWD one instead of using the d15b2 one. .

Still not done yet, stayed up til 5am last night (started at 7pm) trying to get it done. just need to do small things and she should be ready!
  • 1. Check the bolt pattern of the RT4wd transmission and the b2 block.

I would have checked this first...because if it don't fit, no amount of fiddling is going to make it work.

The transmission lines up just fine to the motor. The only thing that was causing a problem was the Oil Pan, which i changed out. Everything else lines up just fine.

i was always under the impression that any and every D series motor was interchangable with the tranny. At least i hope so since i'm plannin on swappin a d16z6 into a RT if/when i get one.
  • htownwagonhtownwagon New Wagonist
Yeah, all D series are interchangable just like B.. They will all bolt up
  • While this is generally true, there are exceptions...in both cases.

wow, xsellouts wagon...good to see its still runnin round

I don't think you'll be able to use the equal lengths with the d15, don't think there is a provision for the intermediate shaft
might be able to use the unequals swapping the equal lengths inner hubs...maybe

    Well.... got it home finally..

Everything seemed work fine, but on the way home it over heated.. Pulled over, and felt the front hose connected to the radiator, and it was under alot of pressure. what could this be? I took off the water neck, so i can check the thermostat, and that wasnt one in there. lol..

But it took the cap off, it spewed water everywhere, so i let it cool down, filled it up with water again, and then drove it home - which was about 10 mins away.. -- didnt act up at all

But turned the heater on, and it didnt blow hot.. kinda weird. anyone know why?

sometimes heater doesn't work cause the valve thing on the firewall is stuck shut. happened on one of my rex's when i lived in a place that actually needed a heater (TN).

did you burp the coolant system?
  • htownwagonhtownwagon New Wagonist
I didnt burp it.. The bleeder was broke or something. It seems to be leaking water from one of the hoses in the back of the motor..

I drove it today like 5 mins away, it stayed in the middle, then on the way back home it started getting hot. Im guessing its leaking water and making it run hot..

I will look more at it Sunday, i work 6 days a week and never have time to spend on it

fix the hose and you'll fix your problem
  • curtcurt Wagonist
    use coolant not water also
  • htownwagonhtownwagon New Wagonist
Okay, filled it up with like 1/2 coolant.. Ran cool..

But i felt the hoses, and they are pretty tite (being under pressure)

    What causes this to happen??

    Maybe clogged radiator?

    Thermostat sometimes
  • htownwagonhtownwagon New Wagonist
Drove it to work today (40 miles)

Didnt have any problems til i got off the freeway and started to drive slower (like 30-40mph)

It got hot, turned on the heater and it dropped back down. Ugh, this temp shit is pissing me off

did u fix the leak? if u didnt put a thermostat in put one in while your at it u might want to run some radiator flush through it. i always use 2 bottles of the 5 minute stuff cuz im impatient. drain the system and put straight water in, drain it, then refill with water and some radiator flush let the motor come up to temp then drain it, put in just water and run the car up to temp again then one last time drain it and then refill with your choice of anti-freeze and water. i know thats a lot of steps but its what i do and it work for me. check your radiator cap as well i was having an overheating problem in my wagon and the seal was broken so it was just boiling out of my overflow.
