Towing???

Hey all! I came across a pretty nice deal on a 88 RT4WD and have few problems with getting it back home.

1- The car has a "blown" head gasket supposedly and needs to be towed or fixed

2- I'm considering towing it back home on a tow dolly(tows the front wheels and leaves the rear wheels on the ground). Its about 60miles away and i have to take 2 ferries there. OR i can just drive the 120miles there. But i know that for most awd or 4wd vehicles, its not the best idea to tow with a tow dolly. But i was hoping that there might be some, somewhat easy way to disconnect the drive shaft or anything else i should consider to make this possible.

4-Also, i remember comming across some threads on the differences between the 89-91 models versus the 88. And was wondering if anyone could freshen me up on them.

Any help is appreciated! thanks!

get youself a long extension or put a few together to reach it i do it all the time its kinda a PITA infact im gunna try to build some sort of lever to be able to switch it on the fly im just not sure what im gunna do to it yet.

omg kurt....i think i love you. lol. You just saved my day!!!! So now i have two options. Tow that sucker on a dolly or if i cant find a truck sufficient enough, i'll just have to replace the head gasket and drive it back assuming thats all that there is wrong with it.

BTW, is that lever hard to move at all? Do i need to hit it with any PB blaster by any chance? Thanks again guys for the quick replies. I really...REALLY appreciate it! Wed, just couldn't take any longer to get here i swear!!!

i towed my wagon from boulder, colorado to slc, utah something like 570 miles. i used a dolly towed by my parents gmc saffari.

the lever isnt hard to move but ive found that if u only loosen the bolt that lets is swing side to side so that there is just a lil friction so that when u slide it to 2wd it wont move around before u can tighten the bolt back down. it has a lil resistence like it naturally wants to be in 4wd mode so it will try to slip towards it. good luck hope this helps.

oh ya and be sure u tape your 10mm socket to your extention because there misc hoses and wire looms near by and they make the socket want to stick to the bolts and not your extention when u try to take it out.

lol i never woulda thought about that tape trick. thanks for the advice you guys. I'm still debating whether or not i want to make to trip out there and just install the head gasket or wait until sunday and tow it. I'll figure it out though. I'll be sure to take pics of the car if i do get it.

bad news, checked out the car and it turned out to be an 87 wagon instead of the 88-91 bodystyle. So bummed about it. Still searchin though!
