My new project the rt4wd CRX

I might have talked about it before but im finally getting started on it. my plan is to make my CRX 4wd with using the drivetrain of our 4wd civic wagons. heres the CRX i pl;an on doing this to i picked it up a few days ago for $900 from a buddy it has a slippin ass clutch and some rust in the rear fenderwells but other than that its a super solid car perfect for what i plan to do.

You might be wondering why would i want a 4wd crx when i already have a turbo'd 4wd wagon..... well i want to build a strictly autocross car that is just street legal enough to be driven on the streets for when i want to test out things like suspension and peformance.

Im sure it will change but for now im thinking a supercharged single cam under the hood is going to be the best set-up for what im doing. the reason is dont want to go with a B series is because of weight and simplicity i want to keep it as light as i can.Im going down today to pay for the wagon in the junkyard that has most of the 4wd parts im gunna need like rear diff, axles, hubs, shifter, gas tank ect ect. any constructive critisism is welcome so fire away i dont mind.

this CRX has aftermarket cruise control im gunna see if it works and if so try to make it fit into my wagon.

And of course heres the parts vehicle. its got a full driveline, rearend, axles, hubs, shifter, and all sorts of misc parts i will need to convert the CRX to multiport and of course 4wd.

nice project should be fun. are you going to use the tunnel from the wagon and mod it to fit the crx?
  • turbo_tegturbo_teg Council Member

well me and mike finally started tearing into the CRX tonight. it took us about 3 hours to get this far and thats with a lot of fucking around. this side is about 70% finished we are happy with the camber and just need to do a lil more tweaken on the top of the traling arm so that it bolts in nicer.
I am trying to get sunday off to get some more work done on it if not mon-thu were gunna hammer on it.

heres what we started with exhaust removed of course and then the tank later

  • Looks like a great project...wish you luck in fabricating like a mutha!

    YOU CAN DO IT!

well the rear diff is mounted the other control arm is tacked together. before u flip out about the axles coming out at wierd angles its because we wanted to be able to use the same axle on both sides because the stock wagon axles are different by about an inch or so and it hides the diff a lil because i dont want people seeing its 4wd right away.... so we centerd the diff and moved it a lil forward and its gunna work perfectly. this seemed easier to us and now when i go to the track i will only need to bring 2 spare axles with me (one for the front and one for the back) instead of 3. And nothing is final its all tacked into place if it wont work we can change it.

    crx4wd.jpg

the left axle is the short one so it looks a lil funny in there but i wanted to just kinda see what it looks like

thurseday night were gunna take it all out and do the rest of the welding to make the traling arms stronger and more apealing to the eyes. then i will put the integra front knuckes on along with make the integra disc set-up fit on the back. once the suspension and breaks are all good to go i will put the new engine and tranny in and measure for a driveline. its gunna be hard but i want to get the car somewhat finished enough to go to the last auocross on the 2nd of september it wont be supercharged and only be running on some azenis but it will be fun.
  • Wow! The 2nd of September? that's a helluva deadline! Good luck though, it looks awesome!
  • turbo_tegturbo_teg Council Member
ya i dont think i will make it just because im on a limited budget and dont want to spend every dime just to make it.
  • Oh well set a goal and go for it. But if it comes down to the dealing, don't cut corners to make it. Do everything right the first time, and you'll be happy next autocross season.
  • turbo_tegturbo_teg Council Member
put the new integra breaks on tonight along with new pads, rotor, and all the struts, springs, and upper control arms from my wagon. pulled out the rear half of the interior. the reason u see the old civic caliper hanging is because my stainless lines have shown up yet and i dont want to get brake fluid all over the place just yet.

can u see anything strange in this photo?................. its only got an axle end in it so when she fires up for the first time i can do some RWD testing AKA cookies, burnouts, and maybe a drift or two.

got the swing arms back in and i dropped her on the ground to roll it outside. before u bitch about the camber of the rear tires yes i know and yes its getting fixed i just wanted to see it on the ground rolling around. i didnt want to mess with the camber since im getting new camber adjusters so why make it perfect when i got new ones coming.... theres a couple pix of me putting a bushing in as well.... oh ya and dont forget theres no motor in it right now either :P

well i went to put the motor in today and i made a bad assumtion even tho i had a feeling it wouldnt work i did it anyways without looking into it. got the motor in and sure enough the tranny mount on the car is different so it touches part of the shift linkage. tomarrow ill chop it off and make my own to fit into the rubber mount im sure it wont be too hard.

with the pasenger side motor mount not in yet it just may have too. i cut the stock mount off the unibody of the car tonight but i had to leave and help my buddy fix his car he was stranded. today i started and quit my new job so i have all this week off so tomarrow im gunna finish hooking up the motor and start doin a lil more work on the inside like removing the carpet and when mike show up hes got some crazy idea on what kinda mount were gunna build..... iono we'll have to see he didnt like my idea

I was almost gunna put the battery in the back but it let u see the 4wd tranny to easy so i desided to keep it in the front. thats why the rear end is mounted up in there so u cant see the rear end till its too late....
