Horn not working under about 1500 or 2k on the tach

So I just replaced my steering wheel with a CVCC one and while the horn was spotty at times before, it now no longer works.

Before the horn would work almost all the time and sometimes cut out. Now it only works over 2k-ish on the tach and only sometimes when the car is off. My tech friend says it may be a grounding issue somewhere on the line, but I'm pretty stumped as where to check.

Anyone here ever had an issue like this?

thats wicked weird cuz mine worked all the time.....i'd check to make sure the horn is actually contacting at the hub where the wheel bolts on?
  • Yeah, it was contacting so well it started smoking from some sort of short. We tried putting the old wheel back on and it ended up exactly the same.

My mechanic friend took off the wheel and just tapped a paper clip between the two points to see if he could get it going, but the horn just keeps making the same weak hoot sound and refuses to honk.

that doesn't make any sense at all. where was it smoking from? where the wheel contacts the hub or somewhere else?
  • Yup, it would smoke right at the hub where the wheel bolts into the steering column. I removed it again and applied a coating of dielectric grease, but while this stopped the smoking caused by the arcing sparks the horn continued having the same problem.

As of last night it no longer honks above 1,500-2k when just idling in neutral, but for some reason seems to work when I'm driving the car. I'm extremely confused as to what the heck is wrong in the system because it all appears completely fine on the surface.

Not to mention I'm about to beat the shit out of my friend (He's your typical parts store asshole) who keeps making lame "Shitty aftermarket wheel" jokes.

    That is really strange.

You're friend is just jealous at the super legitness of OEM Honda. Have you tried the other wheel?
