My 87 hatch door won't open

I have an 87 wagovan and the hatch will not open. Key does almost nothing (I hear small click sounds) and the push button will not release it. I can't get the back panel off without opening the hatch. It is an electronic release and I'm stumped. I checked the fuses and they are all fine. I tried releasing it with a flat head but just couldn't get it. It's extremely frustrating as I have the headliner almost down and the only way out is through the hatch. Anyone have any ideas?

    try some graphite lube in the key hole, i have a 88 wrangler that the locks wouldent work put some in the hole wiggled the key around and wala they pop open easy.
    also if its all gunked up use a little wd40- the lube gets old and sticky causing the lock not to move.

    I had the same problem with mine today, I found if you pull the handle down as far it will go mine was sticking put the key in and turn to the right it should open
