replacement motor do i need to switch oil pans?

klumklum Senior Wagonist
hello everybody, so long story short ive done the research and everything says i need to replace the oil pan from the 4wd stock motor everytime i swap a new motor in?
i dont remember having to do this before, im swaping my motor in now and i feel like im having clearance issues sliding the transmission on the motor. but i am also very sick right now and just kinda irritable and dont want to do much of anything so i might not be trying hard enough..
is there any easy way someone can reccomend to as how to slide the transmission on the motor easier , i used the allignment tool and it lines uip straight still too.

If your car is 4wd then yes you need the notched oil pan to clear the transfer case. Same with exhaust mani it must be from the 4wd.
  • And don't forget the oil pick-up tube.

You should probably tell us what motor you're swapping.

JDM SOHC ZC looks to be a newer gen because it didnt come with a knock sensor.

I had a fear of this, they took the old oil pan when i got my new motor because the old ZC was blown up, i had a rod go thru the oil pan so i didnt think twice about it.
i keep having motors blow is it because of this oil pickup you speak of? i keep shitting piston rings out my exhaust lol
its a JDM SOHC ZC THANKS FOR THE QUICK FEEDBACK YOU GUYS ALWAYS COME THRU! my car hasnt had the stock d16a6 in the car since before i bought it, the car came with a SOHC ZC and the motor blew i replaced the oil pan with my old one and it worked out well but now im haivng clearance issues , apparently due to the fact the transfer case isnt clearing
but because i havent swapped the oil thing will this cause premature wear on piston rings and be the reason for the continuous 2 year headache battle?

The sump for both the DOHC and SOHC ZC should clear the transfer case without the need to modify or replace anything.

so basically i can just get away with running a new 4wd oil pan?

When I put my Z6 swap in, I used the RT4WD oil pan and pick-up.

also the motor i got has a plug where the thermostat is, and my wiring harness doesnt have a plug, is that going to do any thing? like cause my car to overheat lol

I too used oil pan and pick-up, just to be safe.

You'll need to extend the wires from the back of the block to the thermostat housing and update the plug.

do you happen to know what color the wires are? or if i uploaded a picture could you identify them for me i think i know which ones they are but i wanna make sure.

i really dont recall switching my oil pans before this si the 4th motor in 2 years ive put in here and i think i only transfered the 4wd oil pan once.

anybody else wanna chime in with insight @charb where'd you go?! lol

This is for the fan switch. if its not hooked up the fan wont run and the car can overheat when you sit in traffic or the drive thru on hot days

The obd0 88-91 civic engine have this switch on the back of the engine block by the oil filter. You need to extend the 2 wires in the pic below and attach a 2 connector plug from another harness so it can plug in by the thermostat. These two wires may be hiding inside a black rubber boot on your stock engine harness.

i thought those went to a knock sensor? to the left of the single plug on the bottom of the pic where the 3/4" drain plug is at i have a 2 prong sensor that i always pluged that into

i guess that might be the thermostat plug i have the 2 prong sensor. but since it has another thermostat plug on the motor should i be worried if i dont plug it in?
