1 wire vtec with pm6 or ps9 vs obd1 p28 - NEED OPINIONS

I have been reading up on 1 wire vtec activation and it seams a lot easier and cheaper to go this route vs switching to a p28 doing the entire switch from obd0-obd1.
I am in the process of converting dpfi to mpfi and for now am going to use a pm6 ecu and then do a z6 head swap once I make sure everything is running correctly.
I will be using the z6 intake manifold.

What are some opinions on chipping the pm6 ecu for vtec vs going obd1 with p28.

here is some good reading on chipping the pm6

  • I always found it easier to just convert to the obd1 status. It has by far the most aftermarket support for further advancement of your car.

the vtec rpm wire activation is cheap and easy but it doesnt signal the injectors to flow more when vtec is engaged like the p28 does, so vtec will be opperating but you wont feel the same kick as you would with a stock d16z6.
  • Ok just to clarify I would not be doing an RPM activated switch it would be activated via the ecu and the a/c switch.
The pm6 would be mapped to compensate for the vtec and as far as I know be the same as the mapping for the p28 but this part I am not 100% sure on which is why I posted the question.

I understand that the rpm switch without the ecu being mapped to compensate would be rediculous to do but if the ecu is mapped correctly I do not see a difference between the p28 and the pm6 other then p28 being obd1 and needing to be chipped to shut off the extra sensors and mapped. the pm6 would be chipped and mapped......

So my question is more or less for those of you familiar with mapping can the pm6 be mapped to match the p28 for a jdm d15b that is being converted form dpfi to mpfi and would have a z6 head and intake manifold. not looking for max performance just want a nice step above stock and have it run correctly and be able to pass smog.... Of course xtra performance is part of the package just don't see a need to convert to obd1 if obd0 can basically do the same thing....
  • I dont have to deal with smog so im not sure on the rules of that one but I have seen chipped obd0 ecu's chipped to run the same map as the p28 counterpart.
  • Do you see any difference if the mapping is the same or similar provided vtec operates correctly wouldn't they be the same thing?
At least this is the way I see it....

Saves a lot of time with wires and no need to change out the ecu or the dizzy....

from what I remember the motor ran the same to me. chipping would save time and money on the other required parts.

P28 has 2 ignition/fuel maps... It was very hard for me to tune exact map for high cam RPM (PM6/Z6 head on D13B2 short block) without dyno and RTP... if you dont have dyno near you be prepared to drive-and-tune-and-drive-and-tune-and... for a long time.
Converting to OBD1 has another advantages, if you plan another modifications, P28 is the right one, it has more opportunities, up to managing ITBs.
I run my Civic with PM6, but I'll surely convert to OBD1... one day...

im in the process of converting mine to a d16y8 and i got it to idle but it wont rev past 2500 rpms and its running on the pm6, i also have a p28 with the jumper harness but it wont crank with the p28 plugged up

Is your check engine light on with the pm6 ecu?
For the p28 did you convert both the dizzy and the ecu to obd1?
