1987 Wagon problems

Hello I am new to this site, Not many places you can find any info on this car haha. I have a 1987 Wagovan (I think that's what it is called anyways) its the 4WD civic wagon. anyways I am having serious power problems, I went through and replaced the spark plugs, cap, rotor, and was still getting a serious bog down when I hit the gas, I hence rebuilt the carb and now it still bogs down but is belching a white smoke that smells really heavy of gas. I was thinking that maybe the ignition coil is bad and its not getting a strong enough spark? I was wondering if anyone else had this problem?

Thanks, Shawn

  • well white smoke in mind usually means a headgasket . do you notice your block looking like its covered in wet oil or burning alot of it also i would have your distributor checked out

I have an 87 too, but mines a 2wd, it might be a blown head gasket?

    Do you have a D15a2?
  • had a similar issue in my 89 and i know replacing the distributor with a new OEM one did the trick for me

Thanks for the replys, I think I am not sure what motor I have but its the 1500 whenever I order parts for it. I wonder if the distributor is bad? I dont think its a blown head gasket but that could be it too. Pyroskater, was it belching a gas smelling white smoke and horrid power problems?
  • well it was in the middle of the winter, so i couldnt really tell you if all of the white smoke was just normal due to the temps or a symptom of the problem. it did have a funny gas smell, and would randomly bog down on me while driving at times. it even died a few times while starting up at an intersection

If the timing was off, or bad distributor it could be running really rich like your describing. Might wanna do a compression and leakdown to see how healthy the motor is. Could also be what others said - bad headgasket.
