'89 cooling system problems, hopefully this belongs here...

Cliffs:
- car began to overheat while driving
- checked, was low/empty on coolant, so i filled it up
- after adding coolant, the temp. needle only slightly moves up towards H, even after running for a long time
- replaced thermostat, replaced coolant
- now the temp. needle barely moves off of where it sits when the car is off, even after running for an hour

- drives/runs fine
- engine gets warm to the touch
- heat gets hot
- but shows running cold

Should I be worried? I want to say the temp. gauge just isn't working properly, but I honestly don't even know what to check and I'm afraid if the gauge isn't working properly I won't know if it starts to overheat again.

If the engine actually is NOT warming up properly, wouldn't the heat not be hot?

I've been told to replace the thermostat sending unit, or something like that, but I'm not even sure where that is...this is just my beater car. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Did you replace the thermostat with OEM or autozone junk? Id pull the t-stat out and check to see if it is actually working.

I'd also change the cap and bleed the system.
