86 Wagovan 4wd

My learning curve would have been considerably flatter if I had found this board a few years ago.

I've gotten a lot of blank stares at parts counters asking for Wagovan parts.

I bought my '86 Wagovan 4 wd in May of 2003 with 147 K miles on her. Now has 225K.

She is my DD. I live in a small town in New Mexico and seldom drive more than 30 miles a day.

I've made some road trips in her. Just got back Sunday from a 1400+ round trip one.

Car has paid for itself in 'avoided cost' by way of good gas mileage. Consistently over 35 mpg. (If I keep it under 75)

My previous ride got 14 hiway or city.

This is the best vehicle I've ever owned.

Hoping to get some good repair and maintenance info here.

Yah, it's a real Wagovan. Says Civic 4WD on the hatchback.
Push a button on the dash for 4wd. Never comes on automatically as I've read later 86's do.
Has a super low granny gear on the shifter.
5th gear is overdriven.

I read the 3 page thread on "It's not a Wagovan".
Really does matter when ordering parts. Don't forget to mention 4wd or 2wd.
Memorizing the VIN is not a bad idea. At least write it down and take it with you to the parts counter.

Now you have me confused... That thread said wagovans were ONLY 2wd... I have the same car you do. But it doesn't say wagovan anywhere (and it's not an RT4WD either). How do you know yours is a wagovan??

Gentlemen, this is an 86, they had push button 4wd. From what I know the both of you are talking about the 88-91 civic wagon which is why there is a wagovan, a civic wagon dx, and a RT4WD. I dont know much about the previous years though, only the crx's.

Now' I think my car is not, technically, a Wagovan.
From what I think I understand is that only vehicles with chassis codes From Haydz list on this forum topic *It's not a Wagovan*
that are EY are actually Wagovans. If that is not correct, please inform me.

Mine's an AR6 chassis code.
The engine is an EW1 SOHC with a 3 barrel CARB.
As I said before it has a 5 spd manual tranny with a 6th Super Low gear that only operates in 4WD.
The 4WD is engaged and disengaged by pushing a button on the dash. You don't have to shift, stop or change speed, just push the button.
Some of the data I've found on the web indicates that AR code have the EW2 engine. Mine does not. Here's a link:

I tried to track down the earliest Honda Company usage of the word WAGOVAN, but no joy. Anybody?

in an article on Wikipedia that led me to believe I was the proud owner of a WAGOVAN.
I'm still a proud owner, this little car is great no matter what it's called.
