Moving to Nevada with B20b Wagon... Am I screwed?

Moving to Vegas next month with my jdm b20b swapped wagon. A friend told me that Nevada has adopted strict emissions standards, and that my car will be automatically illegal for having an SUV engine in a car.

Of note, my car is very stock looking. From the outside, you'd never guess it was modded. No exhaust or intake even. I don't think I'd be a cop magnet.

My only saving grace may be that I'm in the military. Can I be exempted from registering my car in NV?

You can be until the first time you get pulled over. Then the cop's probably gunna ask you how long you've lived there and tell you that you were supposed to do it a loooong time ago and then make you! Haha

Who knows? It could be years before you get pulled over. If you're lucky!

    Good Luck.
  • Oh, almost forgot... You may have to pay some sort of ticket and/or fine in the middle of there somewhere so try not to! :D
  • Thanks for the response. Now I have to wrestle with the decision of selling her now, or rolling the dice moving with the wago.

    What would you do?

Nah man don't sell it. Unless you really want to. If I were in you're shoes and didn't want to roll the dice with the law. I would just throw in a B18b. It should be able to pass smog or whatever they call it down there.

Bare with me I'm not to aware of the emissions stuff going on down in the states, but up here I have to get emissions tested every year.

The nice thing is they don't care what engine it is as long as it passes.

Sorry if I rambled on. :D

  • I read that they do a visual inspection with the yearly smog, and if they see a b20 in there, its an auto-fail.

I think I'll just stay registered in FL as long as I can and keep my FL driver's license. I did put the wago up on craigslist to test the waters though.

    Just my .02 cents
When I came to Idaho from Cali I was told that the "law" visually inspects when swapping over the registration. That if I had another motor other than stock it was an automatic fail. I have a LS in my wagon, the cop came to Nicks (Stampern) shop and looked it over. Did not once ask me to pop the hood and all he checked was that the vin matched. As long a you pass smog, you'll be ok. IMO
  • Military members get to choose state of residence so just keep FL as your state of residence. The only problem would be if your FL tags expired then it might mean a trip back to FL or registering in NV. I am still a TX resident even though I haven't lived there for the past 14 years  Maybe have your car re-registered before leaving giving you as much time as possible on your current tags.

Also as long as you are active duty you won't be required to register your vehicle in NV (you are exempt according to the link).

Just sell it to me for cheap, so that you dont have to take it Lol...I could use a second wagon ;)
  • im sure you can find someone that you can accidently drop a $50 in there shop and you get a sticker. talk to people.....car people.
  • From what I know of with smog laws, if the engine swapped in is newer than the vehicle year, and has all the required smog equipment that it came with in the vehicle it's from, you should be able to have an arbitrator give you a letter of approval.
  • a stock b20 looks like and LS. unless they are checking the block code just say its an LS IMO. (if they even ask)

Setting aside that the original question has been answered...

This may be an obtuse question. Most of the swaps I've seen (on HCW.com but especially bam-bam's) look pretty stock and everybody seems to be serious about getting everything up to spec and running whatever generation OBD is appropriate. How is this "inspector" going to know what kind of engine Honda put in this thing twenty years ago?

On the other hand, I can't imagine that Nevada doesn't have hot rodders so there's got to be a way for this to be done legitimately.
  • I am in the military too so far just been overseas but like another person stated you can keep your car registered from another sate. In my case CO is home and they do registering online and mail your tags during the month of expiration if you aren't currently in the state. but the state you are in might require you to apply for a decal that says you have tags from another state usually free just have to fill out the form (Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act of 1940) and turn in. but if you have to do an emission test for your state then you would have to drive back.
