viscous coupling v's dual pump multi-plate clutch

excuse the lack of detail in this question - I'm new to Hondas

I have the AWD mechanicals from an '88 civic wagon which I am mating with a D16A8 and installing into a Mini (not a BMW Mini, a real one) and I'd like to know if it is possible to replace the viscous coupling with a dual pump clutch, as per the CRV, and (I'm not sure, but I think) Civic RT4WD wagons made after 1991 (EF?).

The reason I'd like to replace the viscous coupling is so that I can switch the AWD on and off "on-demand". I have read that the 4WD mode is permanently engaged on some models when they are put into SL gear, and that the 4WD is disengaged when braking to allow the ABS to work - this must mean that there is an electronic switch somewhere that engages and disengages the AWD via the dual pump unit.

What models came with the dual pump system?

am I right that it is switchable?

can the dual pump system be retrofitted to the earlier viscous coupling vehicles?

thanks a lot

    Funny you bring this up...

I managed to lock up my 4WD last night by messing with the ALB system. The problem being, i blew the ALB system at the same time.

So the overall answer is yes, you can lock and unlock it electronically.
This was in my '90 EF5 RTi INTRAC with ALB and DOHC ZC.

excellent - I was hoping you'd reply - seems like you know your stuff ;)

do you happen to know if it is the same system as the early CRV's use? the AWD wagons were only sold in Australia in '88/'89, and I think we only got the viscous coupling - unless I can import a dual pump diff from NZ, I'll have to get one from a CRV

PS: by ALB you mean antilock braking, right? also known as ABS.... or is it something else specific to Hondas?

As for a comparison with a CRV i actually have no idea, i also don't know what year they started using the double-pump setup.. :?

As for ALB - yeap thats Anti Lock Brakes, an early Honda version of ABS which uses a pulser ring on the end of the axel with a magnetic sensor sitting about 0.4mm away from the ring, recording the rate at which the axel is turning and constantly comparing all four wheels to make sure they turn at the same rate.

I'll try and get some photos for you of both the centre coupler and the rear diff, which appears to be substantially larger than the USDM item. I'll also get a pic of the under visor image with the 4WD system info (unfortunately all in Japanese i think).

If you were looking at getting a part from NZ i would recommend http://www.stronghonda.co.nz/
