I stumbled upon a post on how to fix a hatch that rattles, but since I have not been able to locate it and I want to correct the problem on my 89 and 91 wagons. Help

Simple:Grease the Hatch latch. You'll probably see a shiny spot on the latch.Peeps talk about replacing the latch. This isn't the prob.I made the mistake of putting too little grease. It kept squeaking.Put about a Pea size drop of grease on & around the shiny area of the hatch latch.

The reason you couldn't find the posting is it was on another forum.
  • I have greased the latch and although that stops the squeak it does not stop the rattle. I was wondering if there was anyway to tighten it. there seems to be too much paly there and when the cars travels on the road all bumps make it vibrate and rattle.

Check the latch reciever to see if the plastic has worn off(black).
 The hatch has rubber bump stops that adjust by screwing in & out.
Check the tyre well for loose spare or items too.
  • So I skimmed through the thread, and didnt see SiWagons post above. Mine just goes into more detial. should be an easy fix for most.

Bringing this back from the dead, because I fixed my the other night and was surprised to not see anything on here about fixing it other than greasing it.

First, your hatch is probably squeaking / clunking because it is loose and moving. Greasing helps because it kills the noise when it moves. If you want to stop it from moving, you need to adjust how it latches.

    1) Open the hatch. On the corners of the inside of the hatch itself there are two large rubber bumpers. If they are not there, this is your noise problem. If the are they, try twisting them, they can be moved in or out. Move them out a little (unscrew) and this will put more pressure when the hatch is closed against the latch. Don’t go to much, or you have a hard time closing the hatch, just enough that you stop the unwanted movment.

    2) Adjust the hook on the hatch (not the latch on the body) to allow for proper closing and sealing with the new rubber bumper settings.

If done correctly, you now have no noise!

  • Mine was horrible, I just never got around to fixing it. Pretty simple really. Once its fixed, its a whole other wagon.
