Tranny question for 88 RT4WD

Sorry I have searched the site for topics on transmissions and didn't see what I was looking for. Hope you guys can offer some asssitance and/or suggestions.

I am a new owner of a 88 RT4WD (since Sept. 2010) and not familiar at all what the gearing is but crusing on the highway at 70mph I'm already pushing 3400-3500RPMs. I'm almost at 4000RPMs at 80mph.

I have a couple of questions:
1. Is this normal on a RT4WD?
2. Is there a transmission I can do a straight swap without any modifications?

Any thoughts would be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks,
Chuck

NO! You can not swap in a 5th gear in the 4WD tranny.
The 4WD is geared low for off roading.

Don't go too tall or it will be a dog, well unless you have much more power than stock. I had 205/60 R15 tires on mine right before I sold it and it was not good. It also hurt fuel economy.

The 5th gear on 85-87 4wd wagons may work. It is the only one I could find a while back that had similar dimensions to the 88-91 RT4WD gear (per service manual specs). Only problem is that it's only a .75 vs .787 or whatever they are, so it may not be worth all that work.
